Vaccination
A cat's air of independence does not mean that it can take care of all its own needs. Cat owners have important responsibilities such as providing food and water, social interaction, and changing the litter box regularly. Remember, cats have only one life, not nine! To prevent life-threatening diseases and enjoy a healthy life, your cat will require regular veterinary medical checkups and vaccinations as well. You should make sure that you are purchasing a healthy bunny. It is best to select a young bunny. He should have clear eyes and a nose free of any mucus. The bunny should be curious and friendly. Check to see the bunny has been spayed or neutered. Most are breeders and pet stores do not alter their pets. You will want to have your new friend spayed or neutered between 4 and 6 months age. An altered pet will reduce the risk of that famous bunny reproduction and will prevent certain health and behavioral problems. In the United States, bunnies do not typically require vaccines, but be sure to check with your veterinarian to confirm the protocol in your area. A tiny bite from just one mosquito is all it takes for the parasite to enter your pet’s body and bloodstream. Over time, heartworm larvae can grow into long worms that live in the heart and major vessels surrounding the heart. The heart muscles get weakened and the pet’s lungs slowly get obstructed. If left undetected or untreated, the worms can even cause sudden death. This is why heartworm preventives are important and should be administered year-round. Tablet or topical treatments are available for you to administer once a month, or the veterinarian can give your pet a preventive injection every six months. Following a heartworm test, your veterinarian will perform a complete blood count and urinalysis if your dog is diagnosed with the disease. The medication for treatment (immiticide) is used to kill adult heartworms and stop them from reproducing and involves multiple special injections by a veterinarian and strict exercise restriction. You will be instructed to limit your dog’s activity during treatment and keep its blood pressure and heartbeat low. Too many worms in the lungs can clog blood vessels and potentially cause death. In addition, routine blood work will be done by your veterinarian to monitor the progress. After treatment, year-round heartworm preventives will be recommended to prevent re-infection.

I grew up in Florida, having moved around a lot because of my father's job as a hospital administrator. At an early age I knew I wanted to work with animals, although that train was almost derailed when I saw a large animal veterinarian have his arm up one of his aunt's horse's rear. But despite this, my interest in veterinary medicine persisted, and when my family moved to Macon, Ga, I started to work at my family veterinarian's office as a kennel helper. Ultimately I went to the University of Georgia where I got my undergraduate degree, and was then accepted to the veterinary school at UGA. After graduating from veterinary school in 2004, I completed a one year residency at Georgia Veterinary Specialists in Sandy Springs.
