VISIT TO THE HURLBUTT STREET SCHOOL HOUSE IN WILTON, CONNECTICUT A visit to Wilton=s one-room Hurlbutt Street School House can be an exciting adventure of experiencing and living the ways of earlier times. The Hurlbutt Street School House is the only remaining one-room school in Wilton still used as a classroom. It is the third school in this rural area and was built in 1834, in one day, by friends and neighbors in the district who donated their services. In 1929 a Ladies Auxiliary was formed, and, as a result, there were several progressive "firsts" in Wilton: first school to have a radio, weekly art instruction, playground equipment, dental clinic, hot lunch program, and visiting foreign students. For 101 years this school house provided an education for as many as thirty children at once, in grades one through eight.
