This home in historic Village Creek has been completely renovated to meet today’s living needs and is designed to be eco-friendly and energy efficient. Owner Jud Aley, of R.J. Aley Building Contractor, a NAHB certified Green Builder, served as general contractor on the project. Jud’s firm specializes in historic preservation, inherently “green” due to its focus on maintaining existing buildings. Thanks in large part to the experience gained on this project, his business has expanded to include eco-friendly or “green” building and remodeling. It has been a rewarding blend of personal and professional goals. While working on his own home, Jud used as much of the original structure as possible, retaining floor, wall and roof framing whenever possible, and recycling items elsewhere. He also strove to make the home’s new addition blend seamlessly with the existing structure by maintaining the clean lines and simplicity that are hallmarks of mid-century modern architecture.

After high school, where Jud's favorite and best subject was history, he went on to get a degree in landscape design. While at school, instead of living on campus, he rented an old farmhouse, further deepening his respect for historic buildings. In his free time, he would drive around and check out old buildings.

They have done extensive work on our house. Including removing the old aluminum siding and restoring the wood siding, completely remodeling a bathroom and restoring the old weight windows to working order.

Carpentry
Cesar Lopez, the lead carpenter on the project, was gracious enough to allow me to interview him and talk about the window restoration process. Cesar has been with R.J. Aley for 5 years and has a background in carpentry. Cesar said that he's learned about 70% of how to do preservation through hands-on experience, with the other 30% through workshops and studying. As a matter of fact, when Cesar stopped by to talk to me, he was on his way to the Yale library to do some research on epoxy and router bits (epoxy is used to repair damaged wood, and router bits are used in carpentry, to carve the curves in muntins or trim).
