COVID19 update - We have continued to prioritize the eye care needs of our patients and the safety of our staff/patients during this pandemic virus time. Starting in May 2020 we have continued to provide patient care to better serve our community, while following the CDC guidelines for best practices for safety. Past processes include staff vaccinations, masks for all staff/patients, air purifiers, and frequent hand sanitizer use with disinfecting of our exam rooms for every patient visit. Starting in April 2023 we have removed mandatory mask requirements but will continue to utilize enhanced cleaning and air purification. Masks may still be worn by staff and patients if indicated or recommended.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease that affects the optic nerve, the part of the eye which receives images collected by the retina and sends them to the brain. Every eye maintains a certain amount of internal pressure, called intraocular pressure. When this pressure rises to abnormal levels however, it can put extra stress on the optic nerve, causing significant damage. Optic nerve damage results in loss of vision, and ultimately blindness.
Ophthalmology
Patrick Hung comes to our practice after many years of experience in the medical field. This coupled with his business and financial experience has enabled him to help add to Bay Eye Medical Group's position as the premier ophthalmology practice in our area. Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration affects cells in the macula, which is the part of the retina responsible for central vision. Central vision is essential for most basic tasks like reading, driving, recognizing people, etc. Thus, although macular degeneration leaves peripheral vision un-impaired, it can be quite debilitating in its advanced state.
Laser Eye Surgery
The LASIK procedure starts with making a thin flap on the cornea. Then a "Cool" light from the excimer laser reshapes the internal cornea. The cornea is finally folded back to it's original position and seals without the need for stitches.
Cataracts
A cataract is an opacity that clouds the natural lens inside the eye. Normally the path of light to the retina (where the light sensors are) is as clear as possible. When proteins that make up the lens clump together, the resulting cataract blocks some of the light, making vision blurry or hazy.

Eye Exam
A thorough eye examination consists of a variety of standard tests designed to measure visual acuity and other vision faculties, as well as observe the health of the eye and check for common eye diseases. There is no pain or discomfort associated with an exam, and they typically take less than an hour.

Dr. Zhou has a very diverse education and training background that took him across the entire United States. He started his higher-level education at the University of Washington, where he graduated with honors with a degree in Bioengineering. He obtained his medical degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. After medical school, his interest in ophthalmology led him to the University of Utah, where he completed a research fellowship at the John A. Moran Eye Center. He then moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he completed an internship in Internal Medicine and his residency in Ophthalmology. While at the University of Arizona, Dr. Zhou served as chief resident and received multiple awards for academic excellence. Dr. Zhou has several publications in international peer-reviewed journals in his field, with a focus on preventing infections after cataract surgery.
