Well, that all depends on your pets’ lifestyle. The “core” vaccines, or those recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association are: Rabies for both dogs and cats, and Distemper, Parainfluenza, Parvo for dogs and Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia for cats. The “non-core” vaccines are those that your pet may or may not normally be exposed to. Bordetella vaccines or Kennel Cough for dogs are generally given if they get groomed, board, or go to dog parks frequently. Leptospirosis vaccine is given if there are wild animals that frequent in the area, if you live on a farm or near horses, or if your dog goes to the lake with you. Cats on the other hand receive a Feline Leukemia vaccine if they are allowed to go outdoors.

In some cases, a pet’s illnesses can be helped through a diet change. The most common reason to change or adjust a diet is to help a pet remain at a healthy weight. We can also use diet to help manage conditions such as diabetes, bladder stones and kidney disease. In our hospital we carry several prescription diets to help with these conditions, but if your pet needs a different diet we can order it specifically for your pet. Dr. Hiland is a 2007 graduate of St George’s University in Grenada, West Indies. She started with our practice as a veterinary assistant in 1996, working on breaks throughout her schooling and has been practicing among our four hospitals since graduation. She has three dogs, two cats, a ball python, a leopard gecko and a fish. In her free time, Dr. Hiland enjoys spending time outdoors and traveling. In addition to interests in general surgery and medicine, she is certified in animal chiropractic care.

Laboratory Services
Sometimes a physical exam doesn’t provide all the necessary information to determine why your pet isn’t feeling their best. In those cases, our clinic is equipped to provide further diagnostics to give us more information on their health. We have an in-house laboratory where we run blood work to check liver and kidney values, as well as red and white blood cell counts. This allows us to obtain a diagnosis faster so we can immediately begin treatment for your pet.
X-Ray
Other tests used prior to heartworm treatment include a microfilaria test, which detects the presence of baby heartworms in the blood. Chest x-rays help determine how severely the heart and lungs are effected, bloodwork gives information about the liver and kidneys, and echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) helps detect abnormalities inside the heart. Each of these tests play a role in determining how severe the patient’s heartworm infection is, and allows your veterinarian to determine the safest possible way for treating your dog.
Microchipping
One of our Veterinary Assistants previously worked at a shelter and had her pets microchipped through the shelter. Months later after the freshness of the Microchipping wore off, her beloved fur baby got out and was busy exploring as she was franticly looking. She went to animal control and local veterinary clinics to give them the information (picture, collar color, name, her contact information) and microchip number. When Animal control ran the chip number she gave them, they found NO information attached to that chip number. So, if her dog was found, they would have no way to return him to her.

General Pet Care

Grooming
Madison started working at Trickum Ridge in 2022. She loves all animals, but especially cats. When she was 13 years old, she started rescuing cats from euthanasia lists in rural parts of Georgia. So far, she has rescued over 60 cats and kittens and when Madison was 14 years old, she started her own pet sitting to help pay for supplies for her kittens. In her free time, she enjoys reading, volunteering with special needs children, and trying to learn dog grooming.
