The Anthem policy is the latest salvo in the competition between independent facilities and large hospital systems. Hospitals have long argued against getting rid of what’s called certificates of public need in Virginia, which require facilities to apply for approval to open a medical facility. Hospitals have argued such a move would allow independent facilities to “cherry pick” lucrative services, one of which is typically imaging services. Hospitals have said it would undermine hospitals’ revenue stream, and ability to subsidize unprofitable services, such as trauma and emergency care.
Colonoscopy
CT screening services are available for individuals who wish to screen for specific illnesses such as lung cancer, colon cancer and coronary artery disease that may concern them. If you are a smoker and therefore at higher risk for lung cancer, have a family history or other risk factors for heart disease, or are over age 50 but unable or prefer not to undergo video colonoscopy for colon cancer screening, our CT screening studies might be suitable for early detection of potentially life threatening disease.

Cyril V. Chavis, M.D., is a neuroradiologist/general radiologist who has practiced radiology in Hampton Roads since 1996. He is a U.S. Navy Medical Corps Veteran and currently resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He received his bachelor of science in engineering from Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas and his medical degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Chavis completed his internal medicine internship and radiology residency at Howard University Hospital, Washington, D.C.. He completed a two year fellowship in neuroradiology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He and his wife, Arwonder, have been married for 30 years and have four children. His interests include advocacy for healthy living through raising consciousness of the importance of regular medical screenings, healthy nutrition, and regular exercise.

Charles Hecht-Leavitt, M.D., A.S.N.R. is a neuroradiologist who has practiced radiology in Hampton Roads since 1987. A native of Norfolk, he received his bachelor's degree from Yale University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Hecht-Leavitt completed his radiology residency at Boston University Medical Center and his fellowship in neuroradiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Leslie, married for 31 years, have two children. His interests include sailing, writing, and shooting.

Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine imaging uses safe and small amounts of radioactive materials called radiotracers that are typically injected into the bloodstream, inhaled or swallowed. The radiotracer travels through the area being examined and gives off energy in the form of gamma rays which are detected by a special camera and a computer to create images of the inside of your body. Nuclear medicine imaging provides unique information that often cannot be obtained using other imaging procedures and offers the potential to identify disease in its earliest stages.
Computed Tomography
Our multi-slice CT scanner consists of a table that slides through a large, circular opening housing a rotating x-ray detector. The process is quick and painless. CT scans are often used to examine the chest, abdomen, pelvis, sinuses, ears and bones and for cardiac imaging. Unlike standard, two dimensional X-rays, CT scans create clearer, more detailed, cross- sectional images.

Andres H. Torop, M.D., Director of Musculoskeletal Imaging, specializes in musculoskeletal radiology and sports medicine imaging. After receiving a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, he received his medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He then completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at Pennsylvania Hospital and his fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.
