Dental Examination
In addition to these affiliations, Dr. Burkey is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Only a small minority of orthodontists have completed the rigorous, optional certification and examination process to become board certified. This involves a written examination as well as an oral examination and a detailed workup and presentation of complex, completed cases.

Teeth Cleaning
As an extra bonus, 10 nickels will be earned when you visit your dentist for a dental cleaning while the braces are on. Ask your dentist to sign the dental cleaning form in order to qualify. We want to make sure that everyone's teeth and gums are healthy during orthodontic treatment. These forms are included in the new patient packet or can be downloaded and printed under the Patient Forms section on our website.
Fluoride Treatment
Inadequate tooth brushing causes your gums to swell up and bleed, an infection called gingivitis. Bleeding means you need to brush more effectively and to floss as well. After the gums regain their health, they will no longer be sore or bleed. Refer to Tooth brushing with Braces for detailed instructions. Be sure to continue to see your family dentist at least every 6 months (or more frequently as your dentist recommends) for regular cleanings, examinations and fluoride treatments.

Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile. Orthodontics provides for an esthetic result and increased self confidence. It is also essential to have a good fitting occlusion (or bite) as a framework prior to restorative dentistry with implants, crowns or bridges. There has been a tremendous increase in the number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment as a result of new esthetic alternatives such as clear ceramic braces like Clarity ®SL brackets, Lingual (invisible, behind the teeth) brackets, as well as Invisalign ® therapy. Treatment times today are much shorter than in the past thanks to advancements such as SureSmile ®Technology and the AcceleDent ® System. In general, adults today do not feel as self-conscience wearing braces, as more and more adults are undergoing treatment. Orthodontics is not just for kids anymore! In fact, around a quarter of Dr. Burkey's patients are over age 18. Dr. Burkey has treated adults of all ages, even into their 70's.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a type of orthodontic treatment done in conjunction with oral surgery to correct more significant bite problems in adults. In adolescents, Dr. Burkey can use growth modification or dentofacial orthopedics to influence jaw growth. This is not possible in non-growing individuals, and so this is where orthognathic surgery can sometimes be beneficial. Dr. Burkey has been involved in a significant number of these combined orthodontic/oral surgery cases, and he has quite a bit of experience working with oral and maxillofacial surgeons if this type of treatment if appropriate for you.
Jaw Surgery
Dr. Burkey can tell you at your complimentary initial examination if orthognathic surgery is an option for you. Depending on the severity of your case and the alignment of your jaw, you may or may not need surgery. If appropriate, Dr. Burkey will recommend that you have a consultation with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
