Nickiâ€™s aunt and uncle gave her a flyer about the Memorial Hospital diabetes programs. At first, she was hesitant but decided to join. Nicki has made improvements on exercising aiming for 30 minutes a day. She also tracks her steps to make sure she is reaching her goals. Not only has her whole family been supportive but her employer has as well. She now has a desk at work where she can convert from sitting to standing throughout the day. This young mother found her key to success was to work on portion control instead of making separate meals for her and the kids. Counting fat grams helped Nicki and she began reading nutrition labels regularly. Her tips to success include packing your lunch so you arenâ€™t tempted to eat out and have a plan for social settings. Nickiâ€™s favorite meal is any dish incorporating spaghetti squash. Nicki said, â€œI would recommend this program to anyone. It was the best year of my life!â€ Nicki said the first meeting was key to her success and sticking with the classes. She enjoyed the small groups that became family style meetings with an open and honest discussion on successes and challenges. After the one-year program, Nickiâ€™s labs have shown significant improvements, including a reduction in weight, cholesterol and blood sugars. Although she enjoyed her weight loss, she was eager to share how drastic her energy levels increased and how overall, she feels so much better.

Phase 2 is a cardiovascular outpatient exercise program, which is continuously monitored through telemetry. Each participant is assessed and an individual program is developed. Education classes include stress management, medication review, low fat, low sodium, low cholesterol diets, smoking cessation, hypertension and other cardiac risk factors.

Moms will be the first to tell you that every delivery and every baby are different. Ashleigh Browning of Beaver Crossing was quick to echo this statement. Ashleigh was under the care of Dr. Ketner and Obstetrics/Gynecology specialist, Dr. Heidrick, at Memorial Hospital Specialty Clinic while pregnant with her daughter. Ashleigh and her husband Justinâ€™s first born, Madisyn, was delivered in Lincoln due to some higher risks during that pregnancy. The care received from Dr. Heidrick was wonderful, but the couple was eager to get back to their family physician for continuing their familyâ€™s care. Ashleigh delivered her next children Callan and Declan at MHCS and just recently welcomed Boden to their family.
Obstetrics
Boden was born on December 17, 2018 at 1:28 pm. Throughout her care, Ashleigh worked with the clinic, obstetrics department, physicians, hospital nursing and ultrasound technician. Ashleigh had a c-section and was also cared for by the surgery team. Ashleigh commended the great communication between the staff, with her, and her family.

Dr. Jacqueline Hobbs and husband Rich were looking forward to becoming first-time parents. Dr. Hobbs stated that she is considered an older maternity patient and explains, â€œMy age brought some additional risks for pregnancy. It wasnâ€™t as easy for us to get pregnant and because of my specific risk factors, I had to do some checkups with a high-risk pregnancy doctor. The specialist and Dr. Connie Novak at Memorial Health Care Systems in Seward worked closely together throughout that process. I was so thankful to be cleared of the risks and able to deliver with my physician Dr. Connie Novak,â€ she said. When asked about this process Dr. Hobbs admitted, â€œAs a physician, you are aware of all the risks and potential complications. It can be scary to be a physician who is the patient with all that extra knowledge. Dr. Novak is an exceptional physician and gives her patients every reassurance. Itâ€™s nice to have someone to deliver your baby that you trust 100%.â€

Computed Tomography
Combines x-rays and computer scans that produce detailed pictures showing problems with soft tissues (such as the lining of sinuses), organs (such as the kidneys, lungs, liver), and bones. Coronary Calcium Screening CT Scan detects the presence of calcium in your coronary arteries used to evaluate the level of heart disease and your risk of a heart attack.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is available at Memorial Hospital Specialty Clinic. Memorial Health Care Systems (MHCS) has partnered with Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center (SNCC) to offer a local, more convenient location to receive select chemotherapy treatments. You may be able to avoid the commute to receive your chemotherapy. In collaboration with the doctors at SNCC, MHCS can administer chemotherapy, biotherapy and hormone therapy. Â€œThe goal is to be ready for planting.â€ Those were the words 37-year-old Todd Schmieding recited to his Seward Memorial physical therapy team many times. Spring is go-time for Todd, who farms near Staplehurst, Neb. But a farm accident the fall of 2015 left him questioning when returning to his tractor would be possible.

When asked, who made a difference in her care? Jeannie just smiled and said, â€œEveryone at MHCS. From the people who clean the room, to the nursing assistants and nurses, the medical technicians, all the therapy services, Dr. Sams, they were all wonderful. You combine that with great food and social services and all I can say is, if you have to be in the hospital, you want to be here in Seward.â€ Jeannie said even in preparing to go home the staff were helpful with resources she might need and an occupational therapy home visit to ensure her success in returning home.

Aquatic therapy at Memorial Health Care Systems was a key component to the rehab process as the unweighted environment allowed Seth the ability to do things he couldnâ€™t do on land with increased safety and good technique. â€œMy therapy time in the pool allowed me to build up my core strength with little impact,â€ says Seth.
