We went to look at a puppy that we had seen on their site.We told them the name of the puppy we were interested in. The woman at the front desk acted like she had no idea which puppy we were talking about. She leaves to go check. Comes back and still acts as if she had no idea where this puppy is. Turns out he had been at the vet and Jennifer had not yet brought him back from the vet. My mom had filled out their online questionnaire, so they knew we were coming. We wait 30 minutes for Jennifer to show up with him. We were surprised because he had a docked tail and is not a breed that typically has a docked tail. We were told then that he had been abused and required his tail to be amputated the day before, which we were fine with. It would have been nice to mention on the website because he was going to require follow up care for his tail. We played with him for 30 minutes and fell in love. Jennifer came in and asks if My mom has a fenced in yard. My mom told her she did not but assured her he would be an inside dog. Jennifer said that in order to adopt him they had to do a home visit and my mom wouldn't qualify because she doesn't have a fenced in yard. I understand that they want these animals to go to good, loving homes. However, it would be really helpful to know ahead of time that a fence is required to adopt their dogs. It is listed nowhere on their site. We wasted an hour driving there and over an hour at the shelter falling in love with a puppy we couldn't take home. We left feeling very frustrated and heart broken. My mom recently put her 14 year old dog to sleep. She desperately wanted a companion at home since my step dad works a lot. I promised her I would take her to any shelter to find the perfect dog. I highly recommend the Human Society of Missouri at the Maryland Heights location. We found an amazing dog! The facility was beautiful and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. What started out as a horrible day turned out to be a great one.

Don't count on getting an animal here. My two daughters and I went to adopt a puppy we saw online. We have been considering adopting for awhile and have been talking about responsibilities and which dog would suit our family. While in the waiting area, one of the people said, we better get this show on the road because we have an adoption event this weekend and we will be taking those puppies. After we played with, and fell in love with two puppies, I filled out an application that could've rivaled a loan application. References, the whole nine yards. While I appreciate their thoughtfulness, we have adopted a cat from them 2 years ago, still have the cat and she's well cared for. We were told they would get back to us within 24 hours, which was very disappointing to the kids. Later we received a call that we were declined from adopting. Due to the fact that I work, 1 day a week btw, and because I mentioned in passing that I was pregnant. I'm only 6 weeks, they said caring for a newborn and a puppy was too much. So in 9 months when I deliver, the puppy won't be a puppy anymore. I appreciate that this is a no kill shelter, but with the hefty price tag of $175 I should think that would weed out the non serious applicants. Now to teach my children the lesson of handling disappointment.

Heartbreaking experience, unprofessional employees.

We were interested in a puppy. After speaking on the phone with the supervisor Jennifer multiple time in one day after falling in love with a puppy we found through adoptapet.com, we made an appointment to come visit the puppy with our children. Jennifer told us there was a family coming at 6:00 pm so we could come at 6:30. When we arrived we found out that Jennifer was not there and the family from the 6:00 appointment was not helped yet either. At 6:50 she arrived and we were able to meet the puppy. Since the other family was waiting longer, they were seated int he meet and greet room with couches and toys. We were hold to stay in the front area of the cat cages to interact with the puppy.

My children (4 & 2 yrs) were excited to play with the puppy and loved that she followed them around. Jennifer was very rude and short with us telling us we needed to keep our children way from the cats with the puppy. However, since we were sitting on the floor in the cat hallway, there was obviously not much room. We held the puppy and pet her instead of letting her down to explore and interact with us because this facility was not prepared or equipped to handle more than customer at a time.

The next day we received a call saying our family was determined by the board to not be a good fit for the puppy. When I asked why, Jennifer said they NEVER adopt puppies to families with small children because "it would be too much responsibility to train an puppy with small children."

I was shocked and offend by their decision. Jennifer knew that we were interested in a puppy and knew the ages of our children. It seems logical to me that if their policy is to determine that puppies are not "good fits" for families with children, that should be clarified BEFORE families come to visit. I hope this review will save other families the heartache and disappointment we experienced.

I went in to adopt a cat was told it was heathly and required new special food. Get cat home had diarrhea from day one called to let them know said it was normal. Three weeks later still has diarrhea took cat to my vet cost around $350 in the first three weeks. In mean time I continued to call pals about this they ask if they could take it to their vet so the came and got cat never told me where they took it and no updates on condition as promised. Finally after two weeks and no updates and dealing with a lady there I told them to keep the cat since vet finally called to tell me they could not do anything more for cat. So now out of around $450. Two months later see picture of cat on their Facebook page with new adopters for cat and cats special food which we were never told that he required any special food. Please be very careful when dealing with them make sure they are telling you the truth about the animal you are adopting!!

This is an excellent small no-...

This is an excellent small no-kill shelter serving both dogs and cats who are strays. Due to size, it is operated on a waiting list. Very good care and treatment of the animals.
