Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when tendons or ligaments in the wrist become enlarged, often from inflammation, after being aggravated. This inflammation results in narrowing within the carpal tunnel, which may compress the median nerve. Symptoms may include burning, numbness/tingling in the fingers, and difficulty gripping or making a fist. You can choose to see any physical therapists as long as they are contracted with your health insurance provider, regardless of where your doctor referred you. It is beneficial to select a physical therapist who is APTA Board Certified in a specialization related to your problem. Research has shown that more experienced Physical Therapists with Board Certification in Orthopedics (OCS) demonstrate greater knowledge in managing musculoskeletal conditions than therapists without a specialty certification. It is also important to find a facility that is conveniently located. In addition, you may want to consider the hours of operation; availability of appointments, and continuity of care (seeing the same therapist each time).
Sciatica
Sciatica generally results in pain in the lower back, with radiating symptoms down the back of the thigh. Depending on where the sciatic nerve is affected, the pain may also radiate to the foot or toes. Sciatica can occur from pressure on the sciatic nerve from a herniated disc (also referred to as a ruptured disc, pinched nerve, slipped disc, etc.), or secondary to entrapment of the peripheral nerve fibers

"Several years ago I had a hip replacement, and decided this place was the closest to get the help I needed, plus it had a small exercise pool. I found skilled and knowledgeable people who had also found that humor is a part of any great treatment. A year later I had the other hip done, and at some point two back surgeries (a month apart). By now, it was like extended family and I discovered I could also come here for exercise, at a very reasonable rate! My husband and I started attending the Silver Sneakers program at the YMCA through our health insurance, but I refuse to give up my visits to Westgate... so I tried to alternate my daily visits. One definite advantage is that all the PT staff are skilled to be helpful and suggestive when anyone has a physical problem, while not overstepping their professional status. Above all, they get to know all their patients, and this includes the staff. They know how to have fun while carrying on a very professional demeanor and the respect goes both ways between the staff and patients. Coming here to exercise or have physical therapy will bring you in touch with all ages, and there is a common caring amongst the regulars that seems to buoy everyone's spirits, regardless of their pain and health problems. I highly recommend Westgate Physical Therapy and Exercise to anyone... a place with a highly professional staff who are serious about their work, and exude a warmth of caring that makes it virtually impossible to leave without a smile on your face.

Frozen Shoulder
Common problems of the shoulder include Tendonitis, Bursitis, Impingement Syndrome, and Adhesive Capsulitis. Increased stress levels to the shoulders tendons; in particular the rotator cuff tendons may result in damage and an inflammatory response (i.e. tendonitis). The body may react by laying down scar tissue or calcific deposits. Tendonitis may lead to weakening of the rotator cuff muscles resulting in shoulder impingement. Impingement causes pain and restriction during elevation of the arm, and results in mechanical compression of the rotator cuff tendons and bursae. The process of impingement may also lead to inflammation of the bursa (i.e. bursitis). The capsule surrounding the shoulder joint can develop adhesions secondary to trauma or lack of use resulting in significant loss of motion. This process is known as Adhesive Capsulitis or “Frozen Shoulder”.
Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow is an injury to the muscles and tendons on the outside (lateral aspect) of the elbow that results from overuse or repetitive stress. Injury is most often caused by overuse of the extensor tendons of the forearm, particularly the extensor carpi radialis brevis. Pain occurs to the lateral aspect of the elbow and/or forearm muscles generally during or directly after activity.

Ankle sprains are the most common athletic injury, and occur when ligaments are stretched or torn. Injury most often affects the ligaments on the outside of the ankle (anterior talofibular ligament and/or calcaneofibular ligament). Sprains on the inside ligaments are less common. Sprains can result in pain, swelling, discoloration, and instability when more severe damage occurs.

Females with a low back, neck, upper back, or upper extremity problem may bring a sports bra, halter top, bathing suit top or choose to use a provided gown. If your referral is specifically for aquatic therapy, please bring a swimsuit so we can get you started in the pool.
Manual Therapy
Rosemary received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in 2016. She received her Manual Therapy Certification (MTC) in January 2017. She has a strong passion for health and wellness and for sharing her knowledge with her community. Her special interest is in sports rehabilitation and working with athletes of all ages, in addition to the general orthopedic population. Some of Rosie's hobbies include hiking, backpacking, traveling, working out with friends, trying new restaurants, and spending time with her husband and daughter.

Flat Feet
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of a tough band of tissue on the bottom of the foot. Generally caused from chronic irritation of the plantar fascia from excessively flat feet (pes planus), acute injury from excessive loading of the foot, or a rigid foot (pes cavus). This inflammation results in pain to the undersurface of the foot, generally most pronounced first thing in the morning with weight bearing.
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is usually identified by pain in the arch or heel on the bottom of the foot. A typical characteristic is pain with the first steps in the morning / after inactivity, but it can also occur after prolonged weight-bearing activity. it is commonly treated as a symptom of “tight heel cords/achilles” by using a night splint, stretching, and/or orthotics. While these may be helpful, they may not address the underlying cause of Plantar Fasciitis. A skilled PT will also typically identify problems with ankle joint mobility, mobility of the big toe, and/or issues with gait mechanics. Treatment will likely include ultrasound, manual therapy exercises, and possibly electrical stimulation, taping, or shoe or insole recommendation.
