Magnification ranges from 2X to 5X, so we can choose the right pair of loupes for the job.
X-rays
Your first visit will give us a chance to get to know you, your dental needs, and your personal preferences for the ideal dental visit. To update your records, we may take a full series of digital and panoramic x-rays. Your checkup will include a VELscope oral cancer screening, DIAGNOdent laser cavity detection, and, possibly, intraoral photographs. Plan to spend about 90 minutes at your initial appointment. After an exam with the doctor and a thorough discussion about your goals and expectations, you’ll meet with our hygienist. She will examine and probe your gum tissue, provide an orthodontic evaluation, and diagnose any level of gum disease, if applicable.
Oral Cancer Screening
While the statistics on oral cancer are discouraging, when the disease is found and treated in the early stages it has an 80 to 90-percent cure rate. Ask your dentist about whether you could benefit from a VELscope oral cancer screening.

Teeth Cleaning
Your checkup will include a thorough tooth-by-tooth inspection; a head and neck exam; an assessment of your jaws and occlusion (how upper and lower teeth fit together); a periodontal exam; and an oral cancer screening. Following the checkup, you’ll meet with your hygienist for a gentle cleaning. She’ll remove plaque, tartar, and debris from your teeth, then discuss brushing and flossing habits with you. If you show signs of gum disease, the hygienist will work with you to plan treatment.
Fluoride Treatment
Our office regularly cares for the dental needs of children. The American Dental Association recommends having your child’s first dental appointment soon after the eruption of their first tooth. Our doctors like to see children for their initial visit between the ages of 12 and 24 months. You may also want to bring your child to your dental checkup when he or she is about one to become familiar with the sights, sounds, and friendly helpers in our dental office. We call this a Happy Visit. At age three, your child's independent checkup will typically involve a tooth-by-tooth inspection, cleaning, and fluoride treatment. Dr. Miller will check for proper development, as well as tooth decay and other areas of concern.
Dental Sealants
Many people have deep pits and grooves in their teeth where bacteria and food particles can hide and cause decay. Children with poor brushing habits may also develop decay on hard-to-reach molars. For situations like these, dental sealants offer a means of protecting molar and premolar chewing surfaces from decay. Recognized by the American Dental Association as a key means of cavity prevention, dental sealants are simply a thin plastic film that can be applied to teeth.

Fillings
For an hour following your visit, do not chew. Wait until numbness subsides before eating. If you had amalgam fillings placed, do not chew for 24 hours.
Resin Composite
Because composite resins are not made of metal, we can blend and mix shades to find the perfect color to match your natural teeth. This means only you and your dentist will know you have fillings. Another pro is that the tooth/composite bond actually supports the remaining tooth structure, deterring breakage and insulating against temperature changes. Medium and small composites can last seven to ten years – that’s as long as traditional amalgams. Best of all, composite resins allow us to keep more of your natural tooth structure intact than amalgams. We believe in conservative dentistry – the more natural tooth structure you keep, the better teeth you’ll likely have in the future.

Root Canal Treatment
Your teeth contain several layers: the outer protective enamel, a secondary layer of sensitive dentin, and an inner pulp that contains components commonly referred to as the “nerve” of the tooth. Each pulp chamber branches off, forming canals that lead toward the tooth root tip. A deep cavity, traumatic injury, or tooth fracture can make the canal susceptible to bacterial infection, which can kill the pulp, stimulate increased blood flow, and create pressure within the tooth. This can cause severe tooth pain and may initiate bone degeneration, tooth loss, and even more acute pain. If you see a dentist in the earliest stages of this condition, the tooth may be saved with a root canal. Otherwise, it should be extracted and replaced with a prosthetic.

Deep Cleaning
Sabrina has worked in the practice for two decades. She began as a dental assistant, then earned her associate's degree and dental hygienist certification at Pierce College. At your visit, Sabrina is one of four hygienists who may perform your dental cleaning, deep cleaning, and hygiene consultation.
