Pet Supplies Plus

i recently had the misfortune of visiting the west central pet supplies plus pet store in toledo ohio and was shocked and confused when i saw a large bloated fancy goldfish bobbing around in one of their retail tanks with it's gills and eyes and much of it's body covered in fungus and completely missing literally every one of it's fins. it could not swim at all and it would have been impossible for this fish to feed as it simply bobbed around the tank gill pumping as it struggled to keep itself upright. all of it's fins were completely gone.



when brought to the attention of the fish specialist and then the store manager their response was to say that it is store policy to simply let any sick fish die of it's disease on it's own, they would take no steps to euthanize this fish. it is certain that it will continue to suffer in their care until it either starves to death or expires from it's disease.



this apparent lack of empathy by the store employees was more shocking than actually witnessing the suffering fish itself as it caused me to think of the hundreds of extremely sick fish that must be suffering in that store on a weekly or monthly basis until they simply die from whatever fatal disease they suffer from.



apparently this is a corporate policy of pet supplies plus as this was suggested by the store manager and it is this which is perhaps the saddest thing of all.



fish are animals too and deserve to be cared for with the same respect and compassion as any suffering kitty or puppy would be. a responsibility that pet supplies plus is regrettably failing to meet. :(
