Epilepsy
Dr. Kooistra is a New Jersey native. She received her bachelor of arts in biology, with distinction, from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she also received her medical degree. She completed her internship at the Waterbury Health Center (Yale University affiliate) and her residency in neurology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. From 1985 to 1986, Dr. Kooistra was chief resident in the Department of Neurology at Florida University. From 1986 to 1987, she was a fellow in cognitive functions. In 1991, she was awarded a mini-fellowship for the study of epilepsy at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Dr. Kooistra's post-graduate studies include courses in neuropsychological testing, clinical neuropsychology, comparative neuroanatomy and systems neurophysiology. She is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and a diplomate of the American Academy of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is also a diplomate of the American Society of Neurology.
