Flea Control Programs: Although fleas are not common in this region of Alaska, from time to time we see flea infestations in our local pet population. If you have flea problem we will review with you the best ways to control fleas in your house, in your yard, and on especially those on your pet.
Pain Management
Anything that causes pain in people can be expected to cause pain in animals. Pets may not show the same symptoms of pain as people do; they usually don't whine or cry, but you can be sure they feel it. Pain medications needed will depend on the surgery performed. Major procedures require more pain relief than things like minor lacerations.

Dr. Jim Delker is the co-owner of Twin Cities Veterinary Clinic with his wife Dr. Debbie Mersch (Delker). Dr. Jim attended South Dakota State University where he recieved a Bachelors in Animal Science. He completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota in 1996. He and his wife practiced in South Dakota and Minnesota for a number of years before moving to Alaska in 2003 when they purchased Twin Cities Veterinary Clinic from Deb's Uncle (Dr. Steve Mersch). Dr Jim has a special interest in hunting and sporting dogs. He enjoys soft tissue surgery and performs a variety of orthopedic procedures including fracture repair and anterior cruciate stabilizations. His hobbies include most outdoor activities including coaching soccer. During his free time he can frequently be found with a fishing pole in hand.

Dental Surgery
Dentistry: Our dental services include teeth cleaning and polishing, tooth extractions, and minor oral surgery. We have digital oral radiography and utilize this service on every pet that comes in for a dental cleaning. This tool is critical for our veterinarians to catch tooth decay that can't been seen with the naked eye.
Veterinary Surgery
If you have an emergency outside of our regular business hours, please call 394-6658 to reach the doctor on call. If we do not answer, please leave a message as we may be tending to another patient. If you have not heard back within 15 minutes please call again as with any technology, cell coverage is not always 100% reliable. If you have not heard back after a second attempt we may be in emergency surgery and you may want to try another clinic in the area.
Declawing
Spaying and Neutering
No, Despite numerous "wives tales" there are no proven health benefits or behavioral advantages to letting your pet have one litter. However there are plenty of advantages to having your pet spayed or neutered. These advantages include decreasing the chances of mammary cancer, decreasing the chance of cystic ovaries and uterine infections later in life, decreasing the desire to roam the neighborhood, decreasing the incidence of prostate cancer later in life, helping prevent urine spraying and territorial marking, decreasing aggressive & territorial tendencies in males, and last but not least--- spaying and neutering decreases the surplus of unwanted puppies and kittens at local shelters.

Laboratory Services
We offer varioius levels of in-house blood testing before surgery. Our staff can review these options with you when you bring your pet in. Our doctors will recommend the most appropriate testing based on the age and health of your pet. In pet over 5 years of age Doctors typically prefer the more comprehensive screen, because it gives them the most information to ensure the safety of your pet. For geriatric or ill pets, additional blood tests, electrocardiograms, or x-rays may be required before surgery as well.
X-Ray
Radiology Services: Our on-site modern X-ray equipment provides high quality digital radiographs (x-ray films) to aid in the quick diagnosis of many disorders. Digital radiography is faster and more environmentally friendly. Digital films also allow us to email x-ray studies to veterinary specialists--often getting results from board certified radiologists within 24 hours. We have also invested in a high quality ultrasound unit. Our doctors have been taking specialized trainining and are becoming more proficient with its use. We hope to continue to improve our sonographic skills as ultrasound can be a very valuable diagnostic tool for our patients.
Microchipping
Permanent Pet Identification- Microchip ID Implants: We offer microchip identification implants using Home Again Microchips. A Home Again Implant helps ensure your pet will return home safely if lost and turned in to a shelter. Nearly all municipal shelters use microchip scanners to determine if lost pets have been microchipped. Microchips serve as a permanent form of ID that can help protect your pet in the event they are lost or stolen. Microchips can be implanted in most pets any time after 8 weeks of age without anesthetic, but we commonly insert the microchips while pets are sedated for routine spays and neuters.
