Diseases that may be associated with dry eyes include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sjogrens Syndrome, Diabetes, Asthma, Thyroid disease, Lupus, and possibly Glaucoma. Dry eye syndrome affects 75% of people over age 65. Tear volume decreases from age 18 as much as 60% by age 65. Treatment options vary and can be determined based upon the type of dry eye and the age of the patient.

Dr. Jeremy Keith was born and raised on a farm outside of Sherwood, ND. After receiving his bachelor's degree in biology from Minot State University in 2006, he went on to Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, OR. In 2010, Jeremy graduated with his doctorate of optometry and went on to complete a one year residency in primary care and ocular disease at Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL.

Hyperopia or farsightedness is the term used to describe an eye that can focus on objects that are further away, but has a very difficult time seeing clearly objects which are close. In the hyperopic eye, the length of the eye from the cornea back to the retina is shorter than normal, which prevents the crystalline lens in the eye from focusing the image correctly on the retina. Having diabetes can be challenging enough with all of the strict dietary and medical efforts that need to made, that paying attention to potential eye problems is often overlooked. It is our goal to educate diabetic patients regarding the potential risks that they may face. Before understanding the disease in complete detail the most important thing to do is get regular eye exams with a qualified optometrist who understands the complexity of this disease. Diabetic patients most at risk include those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The longer someone has diabetes the more likely this can be damaging. There are estimates that all diabetic patients have some level of diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is predicted to be present in 90 percent of those who have had the disease for more than 20 years. This disease will gradually impair your vision and lead to blindness if left unchecked. Diabetic retinopathy often brings no symptoms in the early stages. Vision may not be affected until this eye disease becomes critical.
