Arborist Reports are a technical evaluation of a tree’s condition. Arborist Reports may be requested by homeowners who need an evaluation of a tree on their property for health or hazard. They may be requested as a requirement for the development of a real estate project where trees are located. Arborist Reports are also required by municipalities in order to obtain a tree removal permit.

Crown Thinning – Crown thinning is the selective removal of branches to increase light and air movement in the tree canopy. It can also help to decrease end weight in heavy branches. Crown thinning is also important in reducing wind sail for hazard reduction. Pruning of green foliage should not exceed 25% in any pruning season.

Tree Pruning and Trimming
Young Tree Pruning – Pruning of young trees is an important and cost effective way to improve the health and structure of all trees. Keeping low branches on all young trees is important for developing trunk caliper and better trunk strength. It is also important to develop a central leader in the tree and remove weakly attached or competing leaders. This reduces the likelihood of branch failures as the tree matures. Finally establishing proper limb spacing and limb location ensure a more structurally sound tree.
Tree Fertilization
Trees that may benefit from fertilization include younger trees once they have been established, trees with low vigor or off color foliage or trees with dieback of twigs at the ends of branches. It is not advisable to fertilize trees that are newly planted, have limited growing space or have recent damage to root zones according to the ANSI A-300 Standards for Tree Fertilization. Tree Mulching
Cal Fire has established guidelines for creating defensible space near your home. These guidelines provide detailed recommendations to reduce hazards from fire in three zones. Zone 0 includes the area from zero to five feet from your home’s structure. It is recommended that no flammable material be located in this area. Any dead grass, twigs or leaves should be removed. Use gravel, stone, or concrete surfaces rather than mulch. Keep trees pruned ten feet back from chimneys, stove pipes and roof areas. It is also important to keep leaf litter cleaned from the roof and gutters. Landscape with low growing fire-resistant plants and avoid shrubs that are flammable such as Rosemary or Junipers. Do not store firewood near your home and keep plastic garbage cans away from the structure. Cal Fire also recommends keeping vehicles, RV’s and boats away from your home. Using non-flammable fencing near your home is better than wood fencing or gates attached to the structure.
