Child Abuse
Our firm will donate 5% of our net attorney’s fees on child injury and abuse cases to charities that work to prevent child abuse or to ensure child health and safety. Children’s injuries and child abuse exact a heavy price on our kids and society. Medical Malpractice
Our firm handles wrongful death cases on what is called a contingency fee basis: earning our attorney’s fee is contingent upon obtaining a settlement or verdict. The fees charged are a percentage of the settlement or verdict that is obtained. In most wrongful death cases our fee is 33% of the recovery, but in medical malpractice or other complex cases our fee is usually 40%.

Estate Planning
When a person dies, all of his or her possessions – real estate, money, stocks, personal belongings, etc. – become a part of his or her estate. Estate administration refers to the process of collecting and managing the estate, paying any debts and taxes, and distributing the remaining property to the heirs of the estate. The heirs of an estate are determined by will, and if there isn’t a will, by the intestacy (which means dying without a will) laws of each state.
Wills
Beneficiary Representation. We also provide representation of beneficiaries and heirs within the probate context. We can assist you with determining your legal rights, help you protect your inheritance, and require those named as personal representative to account for their actions, commencing litigation or “will contests” as necessary.
Power of Attorney
Fiduciary Representation. In addition to representing personal representatives and beneficiaries, we also represent other fiduciaries: trustees and attorneys-in-fact acting under a durable or health care power of attorney. If you are a named fiduciary, we can help you understand your legal obligations and duties.
Probate
Usually the personal representative is someone the deceased person has named in their will to administer their estate. If the deceased does not have a will, they are said to die “intestate” (without a will). In this case, someone (usually a family member) must petition the court for the appointment of a personal representative (usually a family member/parent) who then has the legal authority to file a lawsuit on behalf of the deceased person. We assist you in this process and are familiar with probate law and its interplay with wrongful death lawsuits.

Tax Law
Tax Planning. We are experienced in estate tax planning. The federal estate tax taxes certain gifts made to beneficiaries during your lifetime or upon your death if your gross estate exceeds a certain threshold amount. This federal tax is imposed after you have already paid income or dividend or capital gains tax on the asset you are gifting. Washington State also levies a separate estate tax. Washington has one of the highest estate tax rates in the nation but does not currently tax gifts made by you while you are living. If your estate is worth in excess of the yearly federal and state exemption amounts upon your death, this portion of your estate could face a tax of around 50%. Contact us for further information.
