Joint Replacement
When fewer muscles and tendons are disturbed with MST Knee Joint Replacement, their reconstruction is more natural, wound closure is more accurate, and recovery may be faster1. Clinical studies have shown that the subvastus surgical approach used in the MST technique results in less pain (at both 8 days and 6 weeks after surgery) and quicker restoration of muscle control and strength2. Even though it can still take several months for all of the healing of a joint replacement to occur these techniques make getting back to “normal” activities more rapid.

Dr. Nessler received his orthopedic training at the Rochester Mayo Clinic. He has a specialty practice in hip and knee joint replacement as well as revision joint replacement. Dr Nessler joined St. Cloud Orthopedic Association in 1991, and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons as well as the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Dr. Nessler is a consultant for Stryker Orthopedics, a world wide leader in Orthopedics implants and Robotics for Orthopedic surgery. Currently, he consults in the development of new surgical techniques, clinical testing of new implant designs as well as computer and robotically assisted surgery. Dr. Nessler has developed a muscle-sparing hip replacement technique in conjunction with Stryker. In July, 2004 computer assisted navigation was incorporated into his hip surgeries. Navigation in knee surgeries began in January 2005. Robotic assisted surgery in conjunction with muscle sparing hip and knee techniques now allows Dr. Nessler to offer quick recovery and outpatient hip and knee replacement procedures to patients that qualify.

Eight months after my hip replacement I hiked above Greeley Bowl at Alta, Utah ready to ski into perfect conditions: 12" of fresh powder and a clear blue sky. Only one thing was missing - the pain I had endured from my arthritic hip for 20+ years.
Knee Replacement
The addition of surgical navigation has also helped in the advancement of Total Knee Replacement. When using this, the surgeon is able to align the knee replacement along the best mechanical axis or line to allow the best motion and the least amount of wear on the knee parts. This also helps by allowing the surgeon to set this alignment without having to violate the medullary canal (marrow space) in the leg bones. This may help to reduce the risk of post surgical complications with the heart and lungs. While studies are ongoing with regard to computer navigation the early results are very promising.

I am delighted with my muscle sparing hip surgery. The pain was gone immediately. I had my surgery on Friday and was home again on Monday, using only a cane. I was faithful about doing my at home physical therapy 3x a day. I started walking 1/2 mi. when I got home and increased my walk to 1 mile 10 days post op. After 2 weeks I was walking normally, without a limp, without pain and without a cane. The entire surgical experience and the recovery exceeded my expectations! Thank you to Dr. Nessler and his whole staff.
