Cotterpin Design is a boutique furniture maker located in Santa Barbara, CA. We specialize in heirloom-quality custom furniture, built-ins and other fine woodcraft. Jay Keefrider, owner and founding craftsman of Cotterpin Design, has had a lifelong love of the art of woodworking and building. As a kid Jay was always interested in how things were put together and the processes of constructing something that fits your exact purpose. During high school, Jay landed his first job in a real wood shop learning to build furniture alongside master craftsman and sculptor Jack Larimore in Philadelphia. He was hooked. From there Jay went off to study furniture making at the acclaimed Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. At SCAD he was fascinated by the diversity of techniques and materials at his fingertips, and dove in head first creating inspired works in wood, metal, plastics and any number of other media. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts from SCAD, Jay pulled up stakes and moved to California to fulfill his dream of his own woodshop, and founded Cotterpin Design in 2001. The philosophy of Cotterpin is simple: custom furniture must be born from top quality craftsmanship and be as unique as its owner. We bring our clients' ideas to life in the form of fine custom-designed handcrafted furniture and hardwood cabinetry, along with a range of other woodworking services. We have a particular soft spot for building beautifully designed hardwood beds and dining tables. We do all our own finishing and have expertise in a broad range of techniques, from natural finishes that showcase the grain and color of our carefully chosen hardwoods, to special effects finishes such as distressing, crackling or stain blending. We are also experts in furniture repair and restoration. For more than a decade now Cotterpin has thrived, building custom designed furniture with the level of meticulous craftsmanship that can only come from an artisan with a true love of the craft. Jay has also designed and built a variety of other projects, including custom built-ins and finish carpentry in homes and businesses, art installations, display rooms, custom sourced and installed wood floors, he even built some of the stage props for Jane's Addiction's latest tour. Jay now runs Cotterpin with his wife Sirie, who left the research lab to discover a richer life in the shop. They live and work in Santa Barbara with their puppy Tallulah, and love getting to know more of their community with every new client with a new idea. Location

We are located at 434 E. Haley St. in beautiful downtown Santa Barbara. The entrance to Unit C is on Olive St., about 50 feet south of Haley, next to the Iron Horse Garage. It's usually best to call for an appointment to make sure we are not at a job
