B efore selecting a surgeon to perform your weight loss surgery, make certain you know the answers to each of these questions...
Primary Care
How willing is the surgeon to include your regular doctor in your recovery process? Communication is essential and you must be confident that your surgeon is willing to take the time to communicate with your doctor. Written materials detailing the expectations and plan for follow-up that you can take to your doctor should be provided. Remember that many primary care physicians don't know the details of how to best care for the patient who undergoes weight loss surgery. I strongly advise that you ensure that your family physician will be included in the educational and follow-up processes.

Training for ancillary personnel: these are all the "other" people who work in the hospital - X-Ray technicians, phlebotomists, transporters, nursing assistants, EKG technicians, etc. Remember - everyone who comes into contact with you can either assist you in your recovery or potentially cause a complication for you!

Internal Medicine
Look for a "Multidisciplinary Program." This involves a dedicated Program Coordinator, Nursing Coordinator, Medical Director and a dedicated Bariatric unit in the hospital with specially trained Bariatric nurses, not surgical nurses who happen to take care of Bariatric patients. Ask if there are Bariatric trained dieticians, exercise therapists, Internal Medicine physician(s), and psychologists who are available and have special Bariatric training.

MRI
It is highly unlikely that the internal staples described above will set off a metal detector at the airport. It is recommended, however, that if you ever require a test called magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), you tell the people performing the test that you have internal staples. It is generally safe to undergo MRI scanning although most radiologists recommend waiting at least 2-3 months after surgery to do so.
X-Rays

Hysterectomy
People who have a current or previous bariatric procedure or those who have had stomach surgery are not candidates. A woman who is pregnant or is planning on becoming pregnant within the next 6 months, or is breast feeding, must not receive the Orbera balloon. Those with a hiatal hernia may be excluded, depending on the size of the hernia. Other abdominal operations, such as gallbladder removal, hysterectomy, etc do NOT disqualify you.

Plastic Surgeons

Laparoscopic Surgery
Wound infections are less likely to occur with laparoscopic surgery than with the traditional open incision. However, patients with diabetes are at higher risk for developing wound infections after any type of surgery and obese patients require larger doses of antibiotics to prevent post-operative infection. Wound infections are treated with antibiotics and incision care.
Bariatric Surgery
It is important to understand that the contents of this instructional manual are geared toward patients who have had surgery by me, or who are entering my program. I am providing this information for these reasons only and I do wish to make it clear that it is not meant to be “instructional” for a patient from a different program. This is important to understand because each surgeon does the respective operations a little differently and the post-operative programs are very different. What is safe and appropriate in one program isn't necessarily so in another. If you have undergone bariatric surgery, it is important to ask your surgeon about making any changes in your program before doing so.
