Ear Infections

This painful affliction is most common in children, but can affect people of all ages. Infections can also occur in the outer ear. Endoscopy
To diagnose Zenkerâ€™s diverticulum, patients are usually given a barium swallow. This coats the esophagus and enables it to stand out in contrast on an X-ray. Alternatively, endoscopy or esophageal manometry may be performed.

Central vertigo occurs when there is a problem in the brain, usually affecting the brainstem or the cerebellum. These parts of the brain are responsible for interactions between the visual and balance systems; any disturbance can lead to vertigo. The most common cause of central vertigo is a migraine headache. Your otolaryngologist can diagnose an acoustic neuroma primarily through a review of your symptoms in conjunction with a hearing test and imaging scans (CT or MRI). Because growth of the tumor is usually very slow, many times your doctor will simply want to monitor the tumorâ€™s progress over time, especially when few symptoms are present. Regular imaging tests every six to 12 months can track any growth.

To confirm a nasal fracture, your doctor will perform a physical exam. He or she will press on the sides of your nose and look inside your nostrils for signs of broken bones. Topical anesthetics may be applied before the physical exam to control the pain. An imaging test is usually unnecessary, but based on the severity of your injury a CT scan may be required if a physical exam is too painful to be performed.
Chemotherapy
If you are diagnosed with a tumor, then surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or a combination will probably be recommended. Surgery might involve removing a portion or all of the salivary gland and any cancerous lymph nodes.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy delivers radiation to the cancerous cells through X-rays or other high-energy beams, causing them to die. It is most effective in early-stage cancers, where it may be the only treatment necessary.

Dr. Cooperâ€™s ENT practice was like a general practice before the development of subspecialties. In addition to common T & A, ear tubes and sinus surgery, microscopic ear surgery was performed. Dr. Cooper performed the first stapes surgery in the Willamette valley. Head and neck benign malignant tumors were operated upon. Bronchoscopy and esophagoscopy was done to remove foreign bodies and impacted food. Tracheostomies were common. Many nights were spent in surgery repairing facial fractures and lacerations caused by auto accidents. Cosmetic surgery on the head was part of a busy surgical schedule.

Dubbed non-allergic rhinitis to differentiate the two, it produces cold-like symptoms that can leave you feeling miserable and worn-down. It may take allergy testing to rule out hay fever and accurately diagnose non-allergic rhinitis.
