Pelvic floor dysfunction and pain are common throughout a woman’s lifespan. However, they are not “to be expected.” Leaking urine during strenuous activity, or while laughing, coughing or sneezing, is not normal even after childbirth. And while over 13 million American women suffer from bladder control problems, these same women will wait on average eight years before seeking help. In the meantime, it and other pelvic floor dysfunctions extract a heavy emotional and social toll.A healthy pelvic floor is achievable through treatment and allows for comfort with all pelvic functions, from postural support to elimination and sexual function. A thorough evaluation is the first step. The evaluation includes a health history, a review of your current status, and a physical examination. The physical examination includes range of motion, posture, strength and flexibility, among other tests, and may also include a detailed examination of pelvic muscles and tissues. After the evaluation, your therapist will develop a tailored care plan and work with you and your doctor for best functional outcome.

She is an assistant clinical professor of Urology at Georgetown University and works in a private practice in Washington DC. A noninvasive treatment, therapeutic ultrasound utilizes sound waves and vibrations to create heat within injured or affected tissue. This results in stimulated blood flow, which promotes tissue healing. To enhance the delivery and absorption of certain medications, Phonophoresis uses ultrasound waves to drive medication into affected tissue over an irritated area.
Iontophoresis
Based on the science that our muscles respond to electrical impulses, this process uses carefully placed electrodes to initiate muscle contractions. E-stim assists with reducing pain and/or swelling, strengthening muscle, stimulating tissue, and controlling edema. Iontophoresis, a technique that also uses an electric current, delivers certain medicines through the skin; it is especially useful in treating muscle and joint inflammation and irritation, such as bursitis and tendinitis, and in loosening scar tissue.
