Dental Sealants
Ask Dr. Soto about dental sealants, a protective plastic coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts.

Fillings
Tooth bonding can also be used for teeth fillings instead of amalgam fillings. Many patients prefer bonding fillings because the white color is much less noticeable than the silver amalgam fillings. Bonding fillings can be used on front and back teeth depending on the location and extent of tooth decay.
Resin Composite
Newer dental restoratives include ceramic and plastic compounds that mimic the appearance of natural teeth. These compounds, often called composite resins, are often used on the front teeth where a natural appearance is important. They can be used on the back teeth as well depending on the location and extent of the tooth decay. Composite resins are usually more costly than the older amalgam fillings.
Veneers
There's no reason to put up with gaps in your teeth or with teeth that are stained, badly shaped or crooked. Today a veneer placed on top of your teeth can correct nature's mistake or the results of an injury and help you have a beautiful smile.
Crowns
A crown may be made of gold or porcelain. It is made to fit the tooth precisely. It looks somewhat like a thimble and is cemented onto the prepared tooth.
Bridges
Indirect restorations generally require two or more visits. They include inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns and bridges fabricated with gold, base metal alloys, ceramics or composites. During the first visit, the dentist prepares the tooth and makes an impression of the area to be restored. The dentist then places a temporary over the prepared tooth. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory, which creates the dental restoration. At the next appointment, the dentist cements the restoration into the prepared cavity and adjusts it as needed.
Dental Bonding
Bonding is a conservative way to repair slightly chipped, discolored, or crooked teeth. During dental bonding, a white filling is placed onto your tooth to improve its appearance. The filling “bonds” with your teeth, and because it comes in a variety of tooth-colored shades it closely matches the appearance of your natural teeth.

Root Canal Treatment
In the past, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, you'd probably lose that tooth. Today, with a special dental procedure called root canal treatment, you may save that tooth.

Dentures
Implants may also be used to anchor dentures, especially lower dentures that tend to shift when you talk or chew. Plus, for patients with removable partial dentures, implants can replace missing teeth so that you have a more natural-looking smile.

If you have missing teeth, it is crucial to replace them. Without all your teeth, chewing and eating can destabilize your bite and cause you discomfort. When teeth are missing, your mouth can shift and even cause your face to look older. Implants are a great way to replace your missing teeth.

Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile. One of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over twenty-one. Jaw surgery is more often required for adult orthodontic patients because their jaws are not growing. Adults also may have experienced some breakdown or loss of their teeth — and bone that supports the teeth — and may require periodontal treatment before, during and/or after orthodontic treatment. Bone loss can also limit the amount and direction of tooth movement that is advisable.
Tooth Extractions
It's best for the orthodontist to see children by age seven to advise if orthodontic treatment is required and the best time for that patient to be treated. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and crossbites, crowding and other problems can be evaluated. When treatment is begun early, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment.

Invisalign Orthodontics

Braces
What can you eat? Let's talk about what you shouldn't eat! If you've been wanting to drop a few pounds, the first week wearing braces is just your chance! For the first day or so, stick to soft foods. Avoid tough meats, hard breads, and raw vegetables. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But, you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.

Teeth Whitening
You can whiten your smile in one appointment with Dr. Soto or you can use an at-home bleaching system (store-bought or from your dental office) or whitening toothpaste.
Cosmetic Dentistry
About Dr. Soto Dr. "Ata" Soto has been a practicing dentist since 1991. She obtained her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from University of the East; and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Point Loma Nazarene University. She also completed a post-graduate course in Cosmetic Dentistry at the University of California, Los Angeles.

About Dr. Newman Dr. Kaz Newman is a graduate of 1972 with honors. In 1978, after practicing General Dentistry for six years, he attended Marquette University in Wisconsin for his post-graduate studies. He took a residency program in Prosthodontics. He completed his post-graduate training and obtained a Master of Science degree in Orthodontics in 1981. Immediately after his graduation from Orthodontics, he furthered his education in Bio-Material Science in Dentistry where he received his second Master of Science degree and the Walter Joyce, Jr. Research Foundation Award in 1983. Upon his graduation, he practiced Orthodontics for a number of years in the states of Wisconsin and New York. In 1987, he moved to the state of California where he established his private practice of Orthodontics in San Diego, California.
