Blue Heron Paver Install

This review is only pertains to their Brick Paver work. I had blue heron do my Brick Paver work 2 years ago. The salesman was very polite & knowledgeable. I did my homework on the paver installation process and what to look out for by going to the ICPI website. ICPI certified installer is what I wanted someone that would do my job right. Blue heron looked like the obvious choice for me. Blue Heron claimed to go by the ICPI standards in installing pavers. They claimed that the head worker had attended and was certified by ICPI. All looked good.

During the installation I did not see any levels being used. No string line or anything. I notice that the base material was not screeded and leveled correctly. Should have been 4" of base material spread out evenly compacted then spread again compacted etc. I voiced my concern and they looked at me like I was crazy. They just filled up a bobcat dumped it then compacted. No c lare was taken to make sure the base was level with 4" spread evenly. It was 3" in some places 5" in others. They did not pay attention to detail at all. They just ended up compensating by filling in the flaws with dirt. The dirt should not be used to compensate for dips and rolls in the sub base. The pavers will eventually settle. If there is 1" of dirt in some places and 2" in another. This will result in uneven settling. It has to be near exact.

When the job was completed I was astonished at what I was seeing. The walkway had numerous dips and valleys and was not level at all. It looked like a roller coaster. ICPI standards for a level base are 3/8 of an inch over 10feet. I had a huge soup bowl dip in the middle of my patio that collected water like a pool. On my walkway, I had 1" variations in the level throughout the whole walkway. They had the walkway slanting toward my house at the front door. I voiced my concerns and the workers supervisor showed up. He realized that the work was not right and they spent one whole day fixing the dips, rolls and slants. They repaired these flaws by filling them in with sand. After they fixed it, everything looked pretty good. But, I knew it would come back to bite me after a couple freeze and thaw cycles. After two years, the dirt has settled. The dips, rolls and slants are coming back. I spend a few days a couple weeks ago repairing the work myself instead of going though the hassle off dealing with them again.

When they received their final payment, I was told by Blue Heron that they would come back by in 18months as a courtesy to fill in and fix anything that needed. They never did! Not a phone call or nothing.

I would not recommend them to anyone according to how my job was completed. Please ask for a few references first before you hire them. I will send photos that I took during the process of the flaws if anyone needs me to be a reference. Email me your request at Eastern_Shore_VA@hotmail.com I hope someone else has had a good experience with them. But I had no such luck.
