Stroke Rehabilitation
The goal of rehabilitation after stroke is to teach you to become as independent as possible. The keystone to stroke rehabilitation is reteaching the brain to do the functions that have been affected by the stroke. The brain has an incredible ability to retrain a different area of the brain to take over the functions of the brain that have been lost due to the stroke. This is called neuroplasticity. “Neuro” refers to the brain cells and “plasticity” refers to the pliable nature of different brain cells to take over lost functions. With rehabilitation, brain cells regenerate, re-establish, and rearrange the needed brain circuits to resume lost functions despite the original cells and pathways having been damaged by the stroke. The brain effectively compensates for the dead or damaged brain cells. In instances where it cannot establish these new connections, rehabilitation works to teach the brain and body to compensate for the disabilities that occur due to the stroke.
Nutritional Counseling
Stacy Lowe completed her Masters and Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Northeastern University in Boston. She has been working at MountainTop Physical Therapy and Wellness Center in Park City, UT since then, advancing her career as an Integrative Physical Therapist. Her article â€œChronic Subclinical Systemic Inflammation as Measured by C-reactive Protein and its Relationship to Physical Therapyâ€ was published in Orthopedic Practice in 2009. Stacy utilizes biomechanical evaluation, nutritional counseling, and wellness education to enhance her treatments. Her practice focuses on manual therapy including osteopathic and craniosacral techniques, as well as corrective exercises. She enjoys multiple outdoor activities in Park City, using her experiences to help prepare her patients for return to sport and injury prevention.

Everything from monthly menses to childbirth to menopause, all are natural experiences that women encounter which have the potential to cause discomfort, pain or associated health problems.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
DN may be incorporated into a treatment plan when myofascial TrPs are present, which may lead to impairments in body structure, pain, and functional limitations. TrPs are sources of persistent peripheral nociceptive input and their inactivation is consistent with current pain management insights. DN also is helpful with restrictions in range of motion due to contractured muscle fibers or taut bands, or other soft tissue restrictions, such as fascial adhesions or scar tissue. TrPs have been identified in numerous diagnoses, such as radiculopathies, joint dysfunction, disk pathology, tendonitis, craniomandibular dysfunction, migraines, tension-type headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, computer-related disorders, whiplash associated disorders, spinal dysfunction,complex regional pain syndrome, nocturnal cramps, phantom pain, and several other musculoskeletal disorders.

A stroke affects the whole person; depending on the severity it can physically affect both your upper and lower limbs, your cognition, your vision, your speech and your emotional and mental health. As such, it is important to work with a full multidisciplinary team in order to best treat and manage all affected aspects. Your team may include your doctor, your Physical Therapist, a speech pathologist, an occupational therapist, a dietician, a psychologist, a social worker, and other health care professionals. Together this team of professionals can address your deficits as a whole and work together to provide you with the most effective treatment to maximize your overall abilities.

Ultrasound
For many patients, one of the primary objectives is pain relief. This is frequently accomplished with hands-on techniques, modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and/or heat or cold therapy. Movement often provides pain relief as well. Your physical therapist will provide you with the appropriate exercises not only for pain relief but to recover range of motion, strength, and endurance.

Computed Tomography (CT) scan and/or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan: These tests are done on your brain and used to locate the exact location of the stroke and to determine if it has been caused by a blockage or a bleed. These tests can also help rule out other conditions that may be causing symptoms, such as an infection or a brain tumour

Modalities: Thermal and non-thermal ultrasound, cervical and lumbar mechanical traction, electrical stimulation for pain/inflammation control and muscle strength, iontophoresis with dexamethasone for anti-inflammatory effects, moist heat, cold packs and ice massage.

Your physical therapist will utilize a variety of techniques to help maximize your treatment goals. It is important that you communicate the intensity, frequency, and duration of pain to your therapist. Without this information, it is difficult for the therapist to adjust your treatment plan.

Mandy has been a part of the MountainTop team since 2018. She has been a certified athletic trainer and strength and conditioning specialist since 1999. She studied Kinesiology- Athletic Training in undergrad at San Diego State University and Kinesiology- Sports Medicine with an emphasis in Clinical Instruction in grad school at Georgia Southern University. She returned to school to add Physical Therapist Assistant from Salt Lake Community College in 2016. Mandy is also SFMA certified.

Preston Hall has been practicing as a physical therapist since 1997 when he completed his Masterâ€™s degree in physical therapy from Univ of Alabama at Birmingham. He later completed his Doctoral degree in physical therapy from Northeastern Univ in Boston. Preston founded MountainTop Physical Therapy & Wellness Center in 2002 and has enjoyed working in Park City since 2000. Prestonâ€™s favorite activities include basketball, soccer, mountain biking, weight lifting, camping, fishing, and spending time with his wife Janette and five children.

Our new larger facility offers a New SwimEx aquatic therapy pool with a built-in Woodway treadmill that allows the best aquatic rehab available. Our patients can walk on the underwater treadmill, swim against the current, or use the many built-in work stations for a variety of squats and lunges with excellent strengthening capacity while maximally unloading compromised or recovering joints and spine.
