Lymphomas represent a diverse group of cancers, that are divided into 2 general categories: 1) Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and 2) Hodgkin lymphoma. The majority of lymphomas are classified as Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, while Hodgkin lymphoma comprises 10% of lymphomas. The signs and symptoms and aggressiveness of lymphoma can vary greatly, from one patient to another. Possible symptoms can include swollen lymph nodes, fevers, weight loss, night sweats. Once a diagnosis of lymphoma is made, blood testing and imaging are sometimes done to determine the extent of the lymphoma.

Colonoscopy
It is estimated that approximately 132,000 new cases of large bowel cancer are diagnosed annually in the US. Nearly 49,700 Americans die each year and it is the third most common cause of cancer death in the US. One in five patients with colorectal cancer presents with metastatic disease. The increasing of screening through colonoscopy has led to more cases being diagnosed at an asymptomatic stage. However, symptoms can include rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, unexplained iron deficiency anemia, and/or a change in bowel habits. Tests such as a fecal occult blood test or endoscopy are performed. Once the diagnosis is established, the disease is staged by physical exam and CT of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. A carcinoembryonic antigen is drawn.

She received her medical oncology and hematology training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and her internal medicine training at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, both in Boston.
Bladder Cancer
Gallbladder cancer is a rare cancer with approximately 5,000 cases diagnosed each year in the US. Patients typically present in their seventies with a 3 to 1 female predominance. Risk factors include gallstones, chronic cholecystitis, gallbladder polyps, calcified gall bladder, and typhoid carriers. Symptoms include weight loss, jaundice and cholecystis. Diagnosis and staging involve ERCP, liver MRI, or abdominal CT.

Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is the second most common gynecologic malignancy with over 21,000 new case being diagnosed in the United States each year. Most cases of ovarian cancer happen by chance, but it is thought that between 10-20% of cases are actually caused by genetic mutations (specifically in the BRCA gene and/or a disorder known as Lynch syndrome). Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer can be extremely vague. Common complaints include abdominal pain and bloating, feeling of fullness, inability to eat big meals, and occasionally urinary urgency and incontinence. Diagnosis is through tissue biopsy or surgery. Imaging studies including CT and US are often obtained along with a CA 125 tumor marker. Staging is performed at the time of surgery.
Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is the third most common gynecologic malignancy with over 12,000 new cases being diagnosed in the Untied States each year. Ninety-nine percent of all cervical cancers are caused by the virus HPV. Eighty percent of women will encounter the virus at some point in their lifetime. Most will fight off the virus within 1-2 years. Risk factors for acquiring cervical cancer are centered around risks of encountering the virus. They include early age at first sexual contact, multiple sexual partners, intercourse with a high risk sexual partner, history of prior sexually transmitted diseases, cigarette smoking, and immunosuppression. Signs and symptoms of cervical cancer include bleeding or spotting after intercourse, abnormal or foul smelling vaginal discharge, and pelvic pain. Prevention is paramount in the fight against cervical cancer. Yearly gynecologic exams are essential. The pap smear is our best screening tool and often aides in diagnosing precancerous lesions early so that treatment can be implemented prior to becoming an invasive cancer. The HPV vaccine is recommended for both women and men ages 9-26. This vaccine protects against the two most virulent strains of the virus (HPV 16 & 18), as well as HPV 6 & 11 which are associated with genital warts. Diagnosis is made by biopsy and staging of this disease is done clinically.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men in the United State. There are over 190,000 cases diagnosed each year. One out of seven men in America will be diagnosed in their lifetime. It is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men in our country, however survival rates are increasing with improved awareness, access to care and improved therapies for early and advanced disease. When found early prostate cancer can be curable and the treatment approaches improve every year to maximize effective therapy options and reduce side effects.

Before joining the Cancer Center of South Florida, Raymond Tsao, MD, served as an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, where his duties included cancer care, medical education and enrolling patients in clinical trials. His research on pancreatic cancer and lymphoma has been published and presented during national cancer meetings. Dr. Tsao completed his fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, and has been a member of multiple national cancer research organizations, including Southwest Oncology Group and National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project.
Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, among both men and women. Lung cancer claims more lives each year than do colon, prostate, ovarian and breast cancers combined. People who smoke have the greatest risk of lung cancer. The risk of lung cancer increases with the length of time and number of cigarettes you’ve smoked. If you quit smoking, even after smoking for many years, you can significantly reduce your chances of developing lung cancer. The stage of lung cancer guides treatment.

Chowdhary is an esteemed neuro-oncologist and the Director of Translational Research/Neuro-Oncology with the Cancer Institute at Tampa General Hospital who takes a multidisciplinary/multi-modality approach to delivering world-class care. He returns to Tampa General, where he was a staff neuro-oncologist and neurologist from 2004–2009. He was also an Assistant Professor of Neuro-Oncology and Neurology at the Moffitt Cancer Center and the University of South Florida (USF) between 2004 – 2009.

Thyroid Cancer

Ultrasound
Anal cancer accounts for 1.6% of all GI malignancies in the US. Its incidence increases with age; the peak is in the sixth and seventh decades. HPV has been liked to this disease, as has renal transplant, smokers, and patients with HIV infection. Symptoms include pain, mass, constipation, diarrhea, and itching, however 25% of cases are asymptomatic. Procedures for diagnosis include physical exam, anoscopy, proctoscopy, and transrectal ultrasound. A biopsy is required. Staging includes imaging. Women should have a gynecologic exam screening for HPV. Both men and women should be checked for HIV.
MRI
Cholangiocarcinoma is also a rare cancer with approximately 5,000 cases diagnosed each year in the US. Patients are usually in theirs sixties. Risk factors include primary sclerosing cholangitis, hepatolithiasis, choledochal cysts, or liver fluke infection. Symptoms include weigh loss, jaundice, right upper quadrant pain, fever, and palpable mass. Diagnosis and imaging include liver MRI, MRCP, or abdominal CT. An ERCP is often needed for diagnosis.

Computed Tomography
Each year in the United States, there are approximately 900,000 cases of venous blood clots diagnosed. DVT (deep vein thrombosis) is the medical term for a blood clot in the leg vein, and PE (pulmonary embolism) is the medical term for a blood clot in the lungs. For a DVT, symptoms can include swelling, pain, and/or redness of the involved extremity. For a PE, symptoms can include chest pain, or shortness of breath. Some of the common risk factors for thrombosis include: immobility, certain types of surgery, congenital/inherited disorders, blood abnormalities found on blood testing, and malignancy. Diagnosis of DVT or PE is typically made with imaging studies (e.g. ultrasound or CT scan).
Chemotherapy
Treatment options include surgery, adjuvant chemotherapy, chemoradiation, radiofrequency ablation or chemotherapy alone. Chemotherapy agents include 5-FU, oxaliplatin, cisplatin, and gemzar.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation: After surgery, breast conserving or not, radiation may be given to achieve local control and to reduce the risk of a local recurrence. There are new operative approaches such as Mammosite or Savy that provide targeted radiation therapy to the tumor bed while reducing radiation exposure to healthy tissue. Radiation is also used in palliative treatment for bone pain with metastatic disease.

Neurosurgery
Jessica is a NCCPA board certified physician assistant who received her bachelor’s degree in Human Biology at University of Kansas then graduated with her Masters in physician assistant studies with Pi Alpha Honors at University of South Florida. Her primary interests throughout school were neurology and oncology so she was excited to be able to pursue both of her passions. She has been practicing both in neuro-oncology and neurosurgery since graduation. She is trained in use of tumor treating fields and is an active member of Society of Neuro Oncology, Florida Academy of Physician Assistants, as well as American Society of Clinical Oncology. She plans to precept aspiring PAs in the future.
Hysterectomy
Uterine cancers are staged and treated surgically, usually with a hysterectomy and removal of the tubes and ovaries and sometimes lymph nodes as well. The surgery and/or preoperative staging determines if other treatment is necessary. For early stage I cancer, surgery with hysterectomy is usually sufficient. Patients with more advanced cancer may need additional treatment including radiation hormones and/or chemotherapy, depending on the patient an extent of disease.
Laparoscopy
Pancreatic cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the US with an annual incidence of 12.3/100,000. Many cases are asymptomatic, but symptoms can include abdominal or back pain, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, painless jaundice, fatigue and depression. Physical findings include abdominal mass, jaundice and ascites. Paraneoplastic syndromes can occur. Diagnostic techniques include ERCP, laparoscopy, needle biopsy, or ascetic fluid cytology. A CA 19-9 level is obtained as a baseline and followed for response or recurrence. Staging involves CT and PET.

Breast Reconstruction – This involves the artificial creation of a breast by using a breast implant alone, reconstruction of the breast with the patient’s own tissue, or by a combination of both.

Skin Cancer
Melanoma is a cancer of the melanocytes in the body. The normal role of the melanocyte is to live on the body’s surface and protect the body from ultraviolet light (UV). When melanoma occurs the normal melanocytes mutate and become an aggressive cancer. UV exposure from the sun and tanning bed/booths are the most common causes of melanoma. The disease can start in the skin, eyes, sinuses, vagina or anus. Melanoma can affect patients of all ages, color or ethnicities.

Valerie Fiordilino-Maslow is a nationally certified Physician Assistant with a passion for the hematology/oncology field. She received double bachelor’s degrees, an MBA and a Master’s of Medical Science in Physician Assistant studies from Nova Southeastern University. Valerie is well known and respected in the community as an advocate for numerous charitable organizations, in particular, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Valerie’s passion for oncology stems from her father’s four year battle with Leukemia. Since then, Valerie has dedicated her time and life to cancer research, with a concentration in hematologic malignancies. Vulvar cancer affects almost 4000 women in the United States annually and it starts in the woman’s external genitalia including the outer lips of the vagina, the clitoris, vaginal opening and surrounding glands. This cancer may start as a growth or sore spot that doesn’t heal (like a skin cancer) or a wart in the private area that itches and burns. Traditionally this cancer was found in older women over 70 years old, but now many younger women are affected due to lesions such as warts and human papilloma virus (HPV). It’s so important for women to have these private area problems addressed by a medical professional, as the cure rate is high when detected and treated at early stages. Many women may feel embarrassed about lesions in the vulvar area, and this is dangerous since the cancer will spread if not treated.
