Tia Helitas Mexican Cuisine

The food is always good and it is one of my favorite places to eat.

I recommend the wet beef burrito dinner.

I have been to Tia's several times and every time the food has been terrible and the service lousy. The food has been cold and the silverware dirty. When I ask for new food or anything else I just get blank looks and a shrug. I wouldn't go back if it was the last place around.

Tia's has nearly perfected mass-produced buffet fare but has sacrificed quality for quantity. Mongolian grill offerings are a partial saving grace. Little House Cuisine is the most affordable of those we tried, but you get what you pay for: soup and Kung Pao chicken were winners. Ten-Ten Chinese Restaurant does almost everything right, especially with its Fresh Dish options. All three need to improve the quality of their desserts.

The owner of the always-packed Macao and Woosung chow house, Norman Asing, offered all the grub you could eat at a single sitting for $1. His marquee might not have flashed with neon promises of fresh snow crab -- or even potable water, for that matter. But the concept of cramming one's gullet for a predetermined dollar amount endures as a truly American tradition -- and no establishment offers it more passionately than the modern Chinese buffet.
