One of the most important things you can do when caring for your senior cat is to observe their habits and behavior. Their needs may change subtly over the years, but they still require primary care, including social interaction and an enriched environment. While older cats might sleep more, they still need interaction and a stimulating environment to keep their bodies active and their minds engaged. Cats of all ages need a stimulating environment to stay healthy. For indoor cats especially, the need for engagement is essential. All cats need to hunt, play, and interact.
Ear Infections
Ears - There are a variety of ear problems common in dogs, including bacterial infections, yeast/fungal infections, cancers or other growths, and like the eyes they can even tell us about problems with the liver or bile duct system. Ear infections in dogs have many possible causes, including floppy ears, hair that grows in the external ear canal, humidity, water (often contaminated with bacteria) in the ear canals from swimming, even common skin allergies can cause chronic ear infections that don't respond well to treatment unless the underlying skin allergy is controlled.
Emergency Care
We have a veterinarian and personnel on duty six days a week who are trained and equipped to handle any urgent care your pet has. Usually an emergency team consists of at least one veterinarian and several technicians working together to save a pet's life. Emergencies can be things such as accidental ingestion of rat poison, hit by car, and chocolate ingestion. If you ever feel that your pet needs emergency treatment do not hesitate to call or come in immediately.
Infectious Diseases
Feline Leukemia Virus - This virus, like HIV in people, affects the immune system and resistance to disease, and can cause cancer. This virus only lives minutes to hours outside the body so it isn't as casually contracted as Panleukopenia, but does not require contact with an infected cat to spread. It is considered a core vaccination for all cats for the first few years of their lives. Once they adjust to being indoors and are confirmed 100% indoor and no other cats in the household go outdoors the vaccination can be discontinued. NOTE: If one cat in a multicat household goes outdoors every cat in the house is considered an outdoor cat when it comes to infectious diseases and all cats in the household should be kept up to date on Leukemia virus protection.
Electrocardiogram
Before your cat undergoes surgery or a procedure, we will assess internal organ system function with a blood panel and heart function with an electrocardiogram to determine the safest anesthetic protocol to use for your cat. The induction of anesthesia will cause your cat to become unconscious. Once induced, they will be intubated and connected to oxygen and anesthetic gas.

Distemper/Parvo - This vaccine protects against Canine Distemper virus, Canine Parvo virus, Adenovirus type I (canine hepatitis), Adenovirus type 2 (canine respiratory disease complex), and canine parainfluenza virus. Canine Distemper (affects the respiratory tract, brain, and skin) and Canine Parvo (attacks the lining of the intestine, the bone marrow, and the resulting sepsis is life-threatening) are the two most common diseases this vaccine prevents. We use only the latest technology vaccine which eliminates the common side effects of vaccination with a modified live Distemper virus vaccine (muscle tremors, facial twitches, respiratory infection, or seizures). Our vaccine utilizes genetic engineering to provide protection against the disease without any of these side effects; instead of a weakened live distemper virus it uses a canary pox virus whose genetic material has been altered to give protection against the distemper virus. As a bonus, this vaccine gives protection against distemper even in the face of maternal antibodies that can block vaccinations in young puppies.

Internal Medicine
For abdominal organs x-rays show the outside size and shape. Ultrasound can look inside these organs and can reveal problems x-rays cannot. Abdominal ultrasound can be performed here at Warwick Animal Hospital by a board-certified internal medicine specialist by appointment. The specialist can perform fine needle aspirates, biopsies and other diagnostic tests guided by the ultrasound. He will also review case history and can help guide treatment of a sick pet.

Bladder, kidneys and genital area - Kidney failure is the most common cause of death in older indoor cats. Changes in the size and shape of the kidneys can be a warning sign of kidney disease. Cats can also develop bladder and kidney infections, tumors, or bladder and kidney stones.

When used with other diagnostic procedures like endoscopy and ultrasound, x-rays can provide a quick and accurate picture of your pet's health. Utilizing digital radiology makes diagnosis and treatment faster and easier for your pet and your veterinarian.

A physical examination, urinalysis, and bloodwork will help determine the cause. Sometimes x-rays or abdominal ultrasound are needed to look for specific problems like stones, cancer or pyelonephritis. Urine cultures are used to confirm infections and to guide antibiotic treatment. If no medical problems are found, an antianxiety drug may be helpful, along with pheromone therapy.

Your cat may have skin problems that arise from a multitude of causes. You may notice that your pet is experiencing hair loss, pruritus (which manifests as scratching, licking, chewing, biting, or rubbing), discoloration of the skin, unusual odor, crusting, or growths in/under the skin. The skin condition is likely the result of complex reactions to environmental or internal stimuli.
Lesions
Proper teeth cleaning for your cat consists of an oral exam and x-rays. These are typically performed while your cat is under anesthesia and can help us accurately diagnose any dental disease that may be present. Many cats produce feline odontoclastic resorption lesions (FORL) in their teeth. These are cavity-like lesions at the neck of the tooth (where the gum meets the tooth). These lesions cause the roots to be resorbed and are extremely painful to your cat.
