AKL Home Improvement

DID NOT hire this company directly, but AKL Home Improvement was subcontracted by Maddox Roofing in Highland Park, IL, to complete a roof/fascia repair job on June 17, 2020. Although the work was ultimately finished, AKL Home Improvement had to return on June 19th since the job wasn't done right the first time; charged me almost double the original quote to perform the work I had wanted done in the first place; asked me to pay cash directly to one of its workers to purchase job supplies; and damaged my car while onsite and has yet to pay for the auto repair.

PRO: When I called Maddox Roofing on June 17th, they sent out an estimate crew same-day. It turned out to be AKL Home Improvement. I provided a detailed description of the area needing repair while I was offsite, and was quoted a reasonable amount for repairs. I agreed to start the work by phone.

CON: After reviewing photos of the repaired areas on June 17th, I noticed that the fascia area needing to be fixed hadn't been addressed. AKL employees came back on June 19th and I was given a revised quote almost double the original by the owner, Dave. I agreed to the price since my roof was already opened up by his team while evaluating the affected section.

During the course of the repairs, I was asked by the owner to give cash to an employee to purchase supplies. While making a supply run, an AKL Home Improvement employee hit my parked car with a company truck. The company's auto insurance provider has been non-responsive to my damage claim, and AKL Home Improvement itself hasn't reimbursed me for the out-of-pocket deductible I paid to have my car fixed.

I wanted to be a fan of AKL Home Improvement. My roof repair was ultimately completed. However, the additional cost to have the job done correctly and unpaid damage caused to my car warrants a low rating and heads up to anyone who might consider hiring this company in the future.
