Medical Weight Loss
The esophageal sphincter muscles are critically important for swallowing. When these muscles cease to function correctly, patients are often diagnosed with motility disorders – abnormal power and nerve movements along the GI system. The most common swallowing problem is achalasia, where the esophageal sphincter muscles do not relax. The result is that patients have difficulty swallowing, and food may not pass into the stomach properly – essentially, patients have difficulty eating. Beyond the discomfort associated with drinking, patients may experience compromised quality of life because of significant heartburn and unintentional weight loss.

Cyst: Sac-like pockets that contains fluid or waxy material. Cysts can appear almost anywhere on the body, even growing largely undetected. Cysts can be caused genetic conditions, infection, injury, chronic inflammation, and more. Most cysts are non-cancerous, but if your cyst has a diameter over 5 centimeters, a quick reoccurrence after removal, or signs of infection you should call your doctor. Regardless, it is advisable to see your primary care physician or specialist to point it out to them.

Immunizations
Streptococcus, pneumonia, meningitis and other infections are more common and more virulent in those who have had their spleen removed. The complications associated with these infections often require hospitalization and can be life threatening severe cases. To counteract this concern, most patients who have their spleen removed require a more aggressive vaccination schedule than most. This is especially true of older, younger and immune-compromised patients.

Kidney Stones
The only treatment for symptomatic gallstones or infection of the gallbladder is surgery to remove the gallbladder, a procedure that takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Unfortunately, unlike kidney stones, gallstones cannot be removed in a non-invasive manner. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia either by using 4 small incisions in the abdomen (traditional laparoscopy) or with a single incision (SILS). The gallbladder is separated from the liver and removed through one of the ports in the abdomen.

Today, we perform a very successful procedure known as POEM or Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy using a non-surgical technique known as endoscopy. Endoscopy allows us to complete the procedure from the inside without external incisions. The endoscope is a flexible tube that passes through the mouth and into the esophagus. There’s no need for an incision in the chest or abdomen. Not only does this reduce potential complications, but it also minimizes blood loss, pain, and recovery. Further, the endoscopic technique allows for a longer myotomy, which benefits those with type III achalasia or other less common esophageal motility disorders.

Her extensive experience includes time in the Emergency, Telemetry, Neurological, Orthopedics, and Medical-Surgical departments.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Until recently, the gold standard surgical treatment for achalasia and some other esophageal dysmotility was a procedure known as a Heller Myotomy, which involves minimally invasive surgery to cut the musculature of the esophageal sphincter and relax it. While this is often suitable for type I and type II achalasia, its outcomes for type III achalasia, which occurs in about 10% of achalasia patients, are less predictable.
Robotic Surgery
The minimally invasive or laparoscopic offers many benefits over traditional open surgery including a shorter hospital stay, less pain and blood loss, better cosmetic results, lower chance of incisional hernia and a significantly lower risk of infection at the incision sites. The DS can also be performed with robotic assistance. During robotic surgery, the surgeon has complete control over the robotic arms.
Laparoscopy
A gallbladder removal, for example, is performed much in the same way as traditional laparoscopy. However, using SILS, all of the medical devices are passed through a single, larger port in the belly button rather than three or more smaller ports.

Breast Reconstruction
A nipple sparing mastectomy involves the removal of breast tissue due to cancer, but preserves the nipple for improved cosmetic results during the breast reconstruction process. If there is no cancerous involvement in the nipple and certain other criteria are met, Hidden Scar Surgery may be an option. In these cases, the breast tissue is accessed via the fold under the breast, making the scar invisible during normal circumstances.

Laparoscopic Surgery
During laparoscopic surgery the appendix is cut away and removed through the largest of the ports used to access the abdomen. If open surgery is determined to be the best course, a single large incision will be made over the appendix, and the procedure will be performed in the same way. If the appendix has burst and the inside of the abdomen needs to be cleaned, an open procedure may be required.
