Glaucoma

Ophthalmology
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Benner stayed on faculty at UC Davis for one year as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. Dr. Benner moved to Salisbury and established the practice. Currently, he remains active in teaching at the University of Maryland and is participating in several national research projects.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina, known as the Macula. The Macula is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it controls our ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors, and see objects in fine detail.
Laser Eye Surgery
Nearsightedness(Myopia) is a visual problem that affects about one-third of the population Nearsightedness occurs when the eyeball is slightly longer than normal, causing light to focus on a point in front of the retina rather than on the surface of the retina. Nearsighted people can see items clearly close up, but have trouble with distance vision. Nearsightedness can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or Lasik refractive surgery.

Edward S. Jaoude, M.D. is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist who relocated to the Southern Delaware area from The Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, after fellowship training in Corneal Transplantation, Cataract Surgery and Refractive Surgery.

She continued her education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She completed her medical education at The George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC where she was inducted into the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha, earned a number of research awards, and graduated with honors. She completed her internship at Crozer Chester Medical Center outside of Philadelphia. She then returned to Washington, DC to train in ophthalmology at The George Washington University where she had the distinction of serving as Chief Resident. Dr Ahmad completed her vitreoretinal surgery subspecialty training at the prestigious Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit. She has extensive experience with very complex clinical and surgical cases, particularly complicated retinal detachments and severe diabetic retinopathy. She remains active in teaching as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Temple University School of Medicine. Dr Ahmad is also involved in research and has presented her work at several national meetings and published in peer reviewed journals.

Ultrasound
RESTOR, REZOOM & CRYSTALENS Lens Replacement Surgery is performed in a similar manner to cataract surgery. It is performed in an outpatient surgery center. With RESTOR, REZOOM & CRYSTALENS Lens Replacement Surgery, your surgeon will numb the eye with eye drops much like with LASIK. He or she will then make a very tiny incision at the outer edge of the cornea through which a microscopic instrument can be inserted. Using ultrasound from the tip of the microscopic instrument, your surgeon will actually be able to gently break the crystalline lens into pieces small enough to be washed away and drawn through the probe and removed from the eye. Once your natural crystalline lens has been removed, it can now be replaced by a new permanent Intraocular Lens Implant. The new lens is readily inserted and placed in position through the same tiny incision at the outer edge of the cornea through which the natural lens was removed.

General Surgery
After Completing his internship and 2nd year in General Surgery training at The Boston University, Boston, MA, Dr Jaoude joined the department of Ophthalmology at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY to complete his training in Ophthalmology. During his last year of training, Dr Jaoude served as a Chief Resident at the department of Ophthalmology at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY. Dr Jaoude then joined The Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia where he completed Fellowship training in Cataract Surgery, Corneal Transplantation and Laser Surgery to correct myopia (Near Sightedness), hyperopia (Far Sightedness) and astigmatism.
