Our physicians have treated immune-suppressed diabetic transplant patients at the UW Health University Hospital. This experience has allowed our physicians to treat some of the most complex diabetic foot problems like severe bone infections and Charcot fractures. We take pride in making sure our diabetic patients get the proper care they need by working with their referring providers to create a custom treatment plan; whether that be routine foot care, weekly wound care, or properly fitting them with custom diabetic shoes and inserts. Our staff will work closely with not only the patient but their Primary Care Physician and/or Endocrinologist as well to determine if diabetic shoes and inserts are the right course of treatment.

Corn and Calluses – These are caused by pressure and are the most common source of ulceration and infection. Since the pain they usually cause is markedly diminished by neuropathy, you have to look for them and have them treated before they cause problems. Never use over-the-counter preparations to remove corns and calluses or to treat ingrown nails. A podiatrist can treat these by trimming the callus and reducing the pressure with pads or devices inside your shoes. Lamb’s wool can prevent irritation between the toes.

A bunion is a deformity of the big toe joint. As the normally straight big toe starts to point in the direction of the little toe, a bump develops on the side of the foot. The same deformity can occur at the little toe joint. Then it’s called a Tailor’s bunion. The bump is often irritated by shoes and the big toe joint often aches. The big toe may even push the second toe into the top of the shoe until it is irritated too.
