Trees, creeping ivy, and wall-mounted beds are excellent landscaping additions. However, any landscaping near the roof can be a potential threat to the roof’s life. Trees can cause the most damage if they are unhealthy or damaged in a storm, but other plants can act as a bridge for wildlife or cause a pile-up of leaves. Keeping your roof out of the way of harm and free from clutter is essential.

As the holiday season approaches, many families are beginning to look for ways to decorate both their yards and homes. In San Diego, there are few signs from Mother Nature that it is time to start the decoration process for the winter holidays. While there’s no need for shoveling snow off of sidewalks and driveways, the holiday spirit can still be accounted for through the display of hanging holiday lights and decorations. Many residents decorate their yards and adorn their houses with festive holiday lights. To preserve your peace of mind, physical well-being, and roofing system, there are a few things to remember when it comes time to hang those lights.
Walkways
You can minimize the risk of property damage by hiring an experienced and highly rated roofer, as we’ve described before. Additionally, you should make clear communication a priority to make sure that all of your property is out of the way of walkways, paths, and areas where falling debris may be a hazard. Additionally, if there is any work being performed involving torch down roofs, make sure that the roofing crew knows (and follows through) that they should stay at the site for at least two hours after the torch work has been completed to make sure that there are no traces of embers that could cause a devastating house fire. You can also ask what kind of training the workers go through before they arrive at your roof – training makes a world of difference when it comes to avoiding damage during a roofing project.

Window Installation/Replacement
If you have a second story, you should also consider the possibility that the water is coming in from a leaking window or door. There are a variety of issues that cause this, but the most common is that the caulk or sealant has aged enough that it is no longer waterproof. This allows rain to get in, which, if left long enough, can work its way down through the floor and present as a leak in the ceiling below. If this is the case, there is a simple solution. Window and door caulking is available from most hardware stores, and online.
Gutters
While you’re up on your roof to hang lights, you should also take a few extra minutes to make sure that your gutters are in good condition. Make sure to look inside for leaf debris, as in the fall when trees begin to shed their leaves, many can end up in your gutters, blocking the flow of water and clogging them. You can avoid this problem by going in and pulling any debris out of your gutter. This can help your gutters last longer, as well as make them more effective at keeping water from building up on your roof.
Siding
For reference, the ‘pound’ rating of the roofing felt paper is measured by how much 100 square feet of the material weighs on a scale, therefore showing you the density or thickness of the material. The felt paper that is used behind stucco or siding on a house is 5-pound material, while construction paper, or red rosin paper typically comes in at about 2-pounds.
Residential Roof Repair
Another option is a 1 year 0 interest 0 down option. For 12 months after project completion you won’t need to spend a dime on your new roof. After 12 months, the loan interest rate becomes really aggressive, so make sure to pay for the roof within that first year! We recommend this to our clients that may not have planned for a roof repair and just don’t have the money right now, but will within 12 months. Roof repairs typically are not planned, one leak turns into another and you end up in a situation where you need a roof now! This is a nice option to have as you won’t have to make any payments for a year, but make sure you pay that loan off by the end of the 12 months!

Residential Roof Inspection
Roofers are usually so busy during rainstorms that they will not be able to do a deep inspection on your roof when they are there to install the tarp or sealant to stop the leak. They will usually schedule a follow-up appointment for after the rain has stopped in order to fully diagnose and fully repair your roof. Because roofers are so busy during and after rainstorms, it is important to get your name into their system as soon as possible. Emergency repairs such as tarping are not designed to hold out the rain forever – they will last for several weeks before they begin to wear down, and it’s important to have your roof fully repaired before that happens. Schedule a roof inspection with your roofer for after the storm is over so that they can get started on the necessary repairs or replacement as soon as possible.
Roof Vents
There are two different types of roof vents. One is a low profile, they call it a slant vent from Owens Corning. O'Hagin also makes a really nice one, it's a low profile roofing vent. We install these to ensure that flow and follow code that we follow to make sure we get the adequate number of square inches of roof vent based on attic space. There’s another premium option that is only available for asphalt shingles. It’s the VentSure Ridge Vent. This one looks great and is bug proof and water proof. Our standard is a low profile vent which for many roofers is considered an upgrade, but we prefer the look and application of these.

Insulation
Today we'll talk about roof venting. Most of the time we we talk about insulating your roofs. With insulation you want to insulate from your attic space into your office. This will affect the temperature between the outside of your home and the inside. The goal is keep it cooler inside during the summer and warmer in the winter, but you still need to vent air to the outside. In colder climates, you will want to vent the attic space itself. The reason for this is that condensation can build up when it’s very cold outside and warm inside. The trapped condensation can build up on the underside of the roof deck (plywood typically) and lead to moisture buildup. Moisture buildup can cause lots of damage to the wood over time. This is a common problem that we see frequently when we tear off an old roof.
Caulking
In order to keep your roof in great shape for as long as possible, it is recommended to inspect your roof every 1 to 2 years to check for shingle damage, debris build-up, caulking, and overhanging branches. The frequency of these inspections should increase as the roof ages.
