Primary Care

Smoking Cessation
It may help to set a "quit date." Some people find it helpful to enroll in smoking cessation programs or to seek counseling. Other people find acupuncture or hypnosis helpful.
Family Practice
Compile a family health history of close blood relatives. This includes brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and children. From a cardiology perspective, what you are especially interested in finding out is whether any of your relatives have been diagnosed with heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or aneurysm. Knowing when any of your relatives passed away and cause of death is also important. A family history of health events can provide clues as to what illnesses/conditions you may be at risk for developing.

It may take longer for the bleeding to stop if you are cut or injured. If your cut is small apply constant pressure until the bleeding stops. This could take up to 10 minutes. If the bleeding doesn't stop continue to apply pressure and seek medical attention. If you cut is large apply pressure and seek medical attention by going to the nearest emergency room or call for medical help.
Electrocardiogram
Standard exercise stress tests use EKGs (electrocardiograms) and breathing and blood pressure monitoring to assess blood flow in the heart. Imaging stress tests, such as those that use radioactive dyes show how well blood is flowing in heart muscle. Imaging stress tests tend to be more accurate than standard exercise tests.

Be aware that respiratory infections, such as flu and pneumonia, can be very worrisome if you have heart failure. People with heart failure have a much greater risk of serious complications if they get the flu. Vaccines usually protect people from the flu, but the body's immune response appears to be poorer in people with heart failure compared to healthy individuals. It is still very important that heart failure patients get a flu vaccination, but additional preventative steps might be needed to reduce exposure to the flu virus in patients with heart failure. During flu season, this might include reducing exposure to crowds of people, more frequent hand washing, and reduced exposure to individuals known to have the flu.

If heart failure is suspected, various blood tests will be ordered, which may help confirm the diagnosis and reveal the presence of disorders or conditions that can lead to or exacerbate heart failure. For example, thyroid-function tests can reveal overactivity (hyperthyroidism) and underactivity (hypothyroidism) of the thyroid gland, both of which can be a primary or contributory cause of heart failure. Another blood test will evaluate levels of a marker known as brain natriuretic peptide (BNP); increased levels of BNP have been associated with abnormal heart function, helping confirm the presence of heart failure in patients whose main complaint is breathlessness. BNP is also elevated during a heart attack, and in other settings, so your doctor will need to weigh the BNP result relative to your overall health status.
Thyroid
Certain medical problems, such as chronic kidney disease, thyroid disease, and sleep apnea, may cause blood pressure to rise. Certain medicines, such as asthma medicines (for example, corticosteroids) and cold-relief products, also may raise blood pressure.

Ultrasound
A Venous Duplex Study uses sound waves to check the venous flow in the legs or arms for blood clots which may cause pain or swelling. THe test is noninvasive, which means no needles, catheters or dyes are used. Ultrasound is used to create a pisture of the shape of tissues and organs inside your body. The walls of blood vessels, including any deposits or narrowing, can also be seen.
MRI
Absolutely. There may be minor precautions, but these devices are implanted to help you get back to your normal lifestyle. They are not put in to limit you. It is very important to tell any healthcare provider that you have a device implanted. Also, you should keep your ID card with you all the time. Some very rough contact sports may be limited, as well as industrial welding and tractor trailer driving(ICD). As of 2012, there is a MRI compatable pacemaker and lead system that can be implanted. Very strong electromagnetic fields are a potential issue, but there are VERY few things in day to day life that will interfere. Please ask your cardiologist/device clinic nurse if you have very specific questions.
X-Rays
Nuclear Medicine
Dr. Rosa has practiced cardiology in Sussex County since July 1998. He has served as Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and as Chief of the Department of Cardiology at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE. Dr. Rosa is trained in non-invasive cardiology, Nuclear Transesopageal Echocardiograms, as well as invasive diagnostic procedures and pacemaker implantations. Dr. Rosa is board certified by the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He is also a Certified Aviation Medical Examiner and is Board Certified in Nuclear Medicine.
Computed Tomography
Computed tomography (to-MOG-rah-fee), or CT, angiography takes x-ray pictures of the body from many angles. A computer combines the pictures into two- and three-dimensional images.
Chemotherapy
Heart failure is a complex clinical problem and no one test can confirm the diagnosis. First, a doctor or nurse will likely obtain a thorough patient history, including past and current use of alcohol, illicit drugs, standard or "alternative" drug therapies, and any history of radiation or chemotherapy. During a complete physical examination, your doctor will listen to your heart for telltale signs that suggest heart function problems and will listen to your lungs looking for any abnormal sounds. The exam goes beyond the heart and lungs to look for signs of heart failure, such as swelling in your ankles, and there will be an assessment of your ability to perform everyday tasks.

General Surgery
Kevin Caldwell, MD, received his medical degree from the University of Maryland, School of Medicine, in Baltimore, in 2011. Dr. Caldwell then completed an intern year in General Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center and, most recently, completed an Integrated Vascular Surgery residency at Southern Illinois University, in Springfield, Ill.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
There are two approaches to treatment: heart rate control or heart rhythm control, with therapies ideally achieving both goals.. When medication is ineffective, AF treatments can include cardioversion, ablation therapy (that targets specific cells that are causing the AF), and open-heart or minimally-invasive surgery that also targets a specific area of the heart that is causing the problem.

Carlos Neves, MD, received his medical degree from Rutgers University/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey and did a surgical internship at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he also completed his Surgical residency. He completed Fellowship training in Vascular Surgery at Cooper University Hospital in New Jersey.
Hip Replacement
Heparin and LMWH are used in hospitals or clinics because they work right away but can have serious side effects if taken for more than a few weeks. These drugs are used during heart valve surgery, after hip replacement surgery, and for serious cases of blood clots and heart attacks. While you are given heparin in the hospital, you may need regular blood tests.
