Cataracts
More than fifty percent of people over the age of 60, as well as some people who are younger, suffer from cataracts. A cataract is a progressive clouding of the eye’s natural lens that interferes with light passing through to the retina. Currently, there is no medical treatment to reverse or prevent cataracts. Once they form, they must be removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
Cataract Surgery
A cataract is a cloudy lens in the eye. A healthy lens is clear and allows light to pass to the back of the eye. A cataract blocks some of the light. The clouding of the lens from the cataract makes it increasingly difficult to see. Dr. Hecht performs many types of vision correction surgeries including cataract surgery.
Eye Exam
Since eye complications are common with diabetes, it is very important that people with diabetes get their eyes examined on a regular basis. The National Eye Institute recommends that people with diabetes get a dilated eye exam at least once a year. The good news is that with regular eye check-ups with Dr. Hecht and treatment, blindness from diabetes can be reduced effectively.

People with eye disease, including glaucoma or retinal detachment, thyroid disorders, diabetes, cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure are not good candidates for blepharoplasty.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Patients with diabetes are at a higher risk for developing eye conditions as a complication their disease. Over 40 percent of patients diagnosed with diabetes develop some form of eye disease as a result of their disease. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common diabetic eye disease and the primary cause of blindness in the United States.
