Overall
"If I had only known!'

Thank heavens for Aleita and Cape-Able Canines! I feel so fortunate to have discovered them nine years ago when searching for a training facility for our new puppy. Having bred, raised, and shown many dogs in the past, I was looking for more than a "pet store" experience. Aleita teams knowledge of canine behavior and compassion to help dog owners develop better relationships with their pets. She trains you to train your dog.

I started with one puppy in obedience class and have excitedly worked through several classes since then, such as basic agility, retrieval, tricks and games, recall (coming when called), intro to therapy dog work, pet and pal adventures, canine CPR, and others. She also offers classes focusing on special needs such as managing leash aggression, freestyle dancing, training your deaf dog, kids and dogs safety, pool safety, and many more. How proud I am when my dogs come when called, drop items on commend, calmly walk by my side, and are a joy to have in public.

Cape-Able Canines also offers doggie day care and "like-home" boarding. Aleita oversees an experienced staff who, with Michelle, love and care for our dogs as they would their own. They have proven to be an invaluable support for us when we have called upon them for post-surgery care too many times. Our dogs are safe and come home exhausted from playing all day. It doesn't get any better than that!

I highly recommend Cape-Able Canines to any one seeking better understanding and control of their dog's behavior and wish to enrich their relationship. I say to myself. "If I had only known then what I know now!"

Overall
Could do better

It's been a long time since we've had a puppy, but after 15 years our very special Aussie passed on. Having taken the last 3 pups we've had through puppy school it was a no brainer that we would do so with the next. Unfortunately, our old trainer was retired. After all, it had been 15 years. After searching the net, we settled on Cape-Able Canines which had some good reviews. After 3 weeks we sorely disappointed. The pace of the class was incredibly slow. The instructor, Aleita Downer, spent most of the time talking AT us instead of helping us work with our pups. In fact, after 3 weeks, we had learned TWO skills. To make matters worse, Aleita couldn't even bother to learn our names or our dog's name. I watched as she, using a microphone and speaker, yelled at my wife to stop what she was doing without calling to her by name or at least by our dog's name. EVERYONE in the class was confused. My wife told me afterwards that she had no idea that Aleita was even directing her comments towards her.

The only positive I have is that when Aleita says the class is an hour long, it's an hour long. If we didn't finish everything on the syllabus she provided, she would roll it over to the following week...if she chose to, skipping what she didn't feel like doing; in our case it was the bubble machine, which she said the dogs would really enjoy. Whatever!

Overall, I'd say Cape-Able Canines MIGHT be good for someone who's never owned a dog before. For $159.00 plus the surprise at arrival cost of $18.50 for the book she provides I can find much better and effective ways to train my pup.
