Iowa City Public Library was established in 1896 and is governed by a board of trustees empowered by state law and city ordinance. It offers a full range of books, videos, audiocassettes, art prints, CDs and interactive multimedia. ICPL also provides space for public exhibits to increase awareness of the library's resources and promote intellectual freedom. The permanent art collection of the library contains more than 40 pieces of original art work in a wide range of media. ICPL also offers homebound services free of charge to patrons who are unable to come to the library. Iowa City Public Library hosts a variety of programs and events; and offers various online databases, ranging from full-text magazines and newspaper indexes to children's and business resources.
