After a fire, it’s critical to temporarily board up or wrap missing windows and walls and damaged roofs. This protects the building from further damage and allows proper cleaning and drying. Once the structure is cleaned and sanitized, the restoration process begins, and repairs such as replacing windows, repairing roofs and floors, and repairing drywall can restore homes and businesses to their pre-fire condition.
Framing
There are a number of telltale signs that point to the presence of termites in your roof framing or the connected ceiling rafters. The most obvious potential signs include sagging in your roofline, sagging ceilings, loosened shingles or roof tiles, visible termite wings or dead termites in your attic and an attic with visible accumulations of a dust-like substance called frass (this is actually the feces that termite produce after consuming wood.) Other common indicators of termite infestation include framing members that are visibly eaten away, framing members that produce a hollow sound when you tap them, the presence of mud tubes on the exterior surface of a wall or chimney, and a smell in your attic that resembles the odor of mold or mildew.

Your roof works as a complete system to protect the interior of your home from the elements. The foundations of this system are the roof framing and the sheaths of plywood or OSB (oriented strand board) that overlay this framing and form the main roof surface. This surface is covered by an underlayment layer, made from felt paper or a range of other materials that acts as a key line of defense against leaking. A second line of defense is added by installing flashing, which help stops water from passing through any gaps or openings around pipes, vents, skylights and fireplaces made during roof construction.

Residential Roof Inspection
Insurance companies commonly request a roof inspection as part of an application for a new insurance policy. Shingles should also be checked occasionally to ensure none are damaged, loose or missing.
