Vaccination
These are the first cases of Canine Influenza that we have been made aware of in recent months. A vaccination is available and can be administered upon request. At this time, we do not feel every patient needs to be vaccinated, however dogs who spend time with other dogs on a regular basis or who may be traveling to the Kandiyohi County area are considered higher risk and would be good candidates for the vaccination. If you board your dog or send them to daycare, please check with the facility to make sure you understand their policies on vaccinations.
Behavioral Counseling
We carry veterinary recommended CET dental home care products, behavior modification products (such as Feliway and Adaptil), supplements, high quality treats and special snacks for your dog or cat. We also carry medication administration products such as Pill Pockets. Additionally, Gehrman Animal Hospital carries Royal Canin and Purina prescription diets in stock. We can order other prescription diets through our online store!
Nutritional Counseling
She enjoys helping in surgery and has a special interest in dentistry. She has additional training in pet nutrition and weight management and is a certified weight coach. She would be happy to help any pets in need to develop a weight loss plan. Kathy lives in Maple Plain with her husband and 2 sons. She loves hanging out with them especially outside in the yard, by the campfire or in the boat.

It is important to note that heartworm medication can be continued without a heartworm test, however heartworm testing should be performed annually to ensure there has not been exposure to heartworm disease that would require more aggressive treatment. Additionally, an annual heartworm and tick-borne test also checks for tick exposure which may require further testing and treatment.
Pain Management
All pets benefit from a professional teeth cleaning and many dogs and cats will need their teeth cleaned annually. Dental procedures are scheduled like a surgery appointment. General anesthesia is required for the procedure in accordance with AAHA guidelines to do a comprehensive cleaning. Anesthesia allows a thorough cleaning under the gums where 60% of the tartar and plaque are located, as well as providing some pain relief during the procedure.

Leptospirosis Treatment
It may not seem like it in the dark, snowy and cold days of winter, but warmer weather is approaching. With warmer weather, we want to discuss a common and concerning bacterial organism, called Leptospirosis.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Not only are there different vaccines for different diseases, but there are different types and combinations of vaccines. Vaccinations are tailored based on the pet’s lifestyle, however, core vaccinations are recommended for all dogs and cats. Core vaccines are considered vital to all pets based on risk of exposure, severity of disease or transmissibility to humans. The core vaccinations in dogs and cats include rabies and distemper vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are required by law in most states. If a pet is exposed to a wild animal carrying the rabies virus, this vaccination could save your pet’s life. The distemper vaccination for dogs includes protection against distemper virus (often fatal), canine hepatitis virus, parvovirus (incredibly contagious and often fatal) and parainï¬‚uenza. The distemper vaccination in cats includes protection against rhinotracheitis (respiratory virus), calicivirus and panleukopenia virus (often fatal).
Ear Infection Treatment
At the onset of an ear infection, it is important for your pet to visit us to determine exactly what is going on. From there, we can advise you on if your pet needs a special medicated ear wash, if there is a foreign body that needs to be removed (surprisingly the most common foreign body is grass seeds!), or if a regular at home ear cleaning regiment would be right for your pet. As the weather warms up, our pets have more opportunities to be outside and be active. We want them to enjoy some exercise, but we also need to be prepared to deal with problems that all this activity can cause our arthritic pets. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the medical term referring to a form of chronic joint inflammation caused by deterioration of joint cartilage, resulting in inflammation and pain. In contrast to humans, osteoarthritis in pets most commonly occurs secondarily due to developmental disease (cranial cruciate ligament tears, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia). The joints most commonly affected are the hip, knees and elbows. Contributing factors to OA include breed/genetics, age, bodyweight, exercise and diet.

Thyroid disease is one of the most common metabolic diseases affecting dogs and cats. Thankfully, thyroid issues are very treat- able and sometimes curable. The types of thyroid disease that develops in dogs and cats are very different, and it is important to know what are the clinical signs (symptoms) to look for. Hyper- thyroidism, or the overproduction of the thyroid hormone, is a condition that affects a great number of middle-aged and older cats. Hypothyroidism, or the lack of appropriate thyroid hor- mone, is a common issue in middle-aged to older dogs.

Small Animal Surgery
Dr. Ian graduated from Kenyon College with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. He went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and then completed a rotating small animal surgery and medicine internship at VCA Alameda East in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Ian is a Minnesotan through and through and was happy to return to his hometown of Minneapolis after his internship. He is thrilled to be part of the staff at Gehrman Animal Hospital and looks forward to building meaningful relationships with clients and their beloved pets. Dr. Ian holds a special interest in internal medicine/metabolic diseases, though he truly enjoys all aspects of general practice. In his spare time, he enjoys recreational sports, from golf to ice curling. He is a huge Minnesota Vikings fan and is patiently awaiting their first Super Bowl win. He and his wife Ashley have two loving and goofy pets, a pit bull named Toast and a cat named Nayah.

Could you imagine going to the dentist for the first time and the dentist doesn’t speak your language or have any way to communicate to you what they are going to do and why it is important to your overall health? The buzzing of the tools and the sharp instruments coming at a vulnerable and sensitive part of your anatomy would be enough to send the bravest person running for the hills. This is exactly how a dog or cat would feel if they aren’t anesthetized for dental care. Cleanings that can take place while your pet is awake can only be cosmetic at best, and anesthesia is required for tartar removal and cleaning under the gums. Before any dental cleaning takes place, it is necessary to run tests to ensure your pet is healthy enough have the procedure completed, so blood work and radiographs (dental x-rays) are recommended before a dental cleaning.
