Plantar Fasciitis
The most common cause of heel pain, at least in adults, is a condition called plantar fasciitis. A long ligament called the plantar fascia runs across the entire underside of your foot, and it’s very vulnerable to tearing and inflammation near the point of insertion into the heel bone. This type of heel pain is often described as a sharp, stabbing, tearing sensation, and it’s often worse during the first few steps after a long break (such as getting up from bed).

Wound Care
Wound care treatment will always include debridement of the wound. This means removing dead tissue, infected tissue, and anything else that could get in the way of the wound healing. Depending on the state of the wound, we may also recommend more frequent appointments to monitor the progress of the wound and keep it clean.
Ankle Surgery
Ideally, foot and ankle surgery should be considered a last resort. Even for bony deformities like bunions or hammertoes, conservative measures can be used to help you alleviate your pain and engage in full activity. If we can spare you the knife, we will.
Bunions
For example, if a patient has an abnormal foot structure that causes excess pressure against a part of the foot, insoles can be designed to provide extra cushioning and support to offload this extra weight. Areas where there are bunions, calluses, or other “danger zones” can also be helped in the same way.
Ingrown Toenails
The most common cause of ingrown toenails is incorrectly trimming them. Toenails should be trimmed straight across, and if you have difficulty cutting them, you need to see a podiatrist and have it taken care of in a sterile environment.

Corns
We strongly recommend anybody with diabetes and a history of foot problems visit our office for a checkup once every two months. During this time, we’ll test you for any emerging trouble signs, such as poor circulation or nerve function. We’ll also provide any regular maintenance care you may need, including toenail trimming, dealing with corns and calluses, etc.
Ulcer
Second, diabetes can reduce circulation, providing less oxygen and nutrients that our cells need to heal. The feet tend to suffer the effects of reduced circulation first. As a result, wounds on the feet tend to heal slower compared to the rest of the body, and they may not even heal at all without proper attention. If the sore remains and becomes worse as one continues to walk on it, it can become a large, deep ulcer with a higher risk of infection and increased risk of amputation.
Calluses
“I am absolutely thrilled with Dr. Guisinger and my treatment here. I tore my posterior tibial tendon 2 years ago and previously spent over $3,000 on a poor orthotic, laser, acupuncture and pain medications all temporary at best. The crossed toes on the other foot were also a problem and working on my feet was becoming impossible. Dr. Guisinger was wonderful for her overall treatment and patience in explaining everything and trimming calluses. Best of all she made a new set of orthotics which are heavenly! Fungus
The nail is usually discolored in some way – darkening yellow, sometimes blackish and opaque discoloration of the nail. It can also present as white splotches on the nail. As the fungus progresses, the nail can get thicker and brittle. Treatment is best if detected early.

Physical Therapy
Most fractures tend to heal within 6 weeks if all advice is followed. Physical therapy and exercises may also be recommended to help recondition and strengthen the muscles and tendons surrounding the healed bone.
Flatfoot Correction
Some foot surgeries are chosen to excise unwanted tissue or bone, like neuromas or bone spurs. Others are meant to release or relax tight structures—for example releasing a tendon or ligament pulling painfully on your heel. Some conditions, like bunions or flatfoot correction, may require more complicated reconstructive surgeries where bones must be cut, realigned, and/or fused to restore a healthy structure and function to the feet.

Dr. Guisinger attended Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan and then the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, where she received her Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine. She is a member of the Michigan Podiatric Medical Association, American Podiatric Medical Association, and American Diabetes Association, and is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. She specializes in primary podiatric medicine, including diabetic wound care, limb salvage, gout, arthritis and has special protocols for heel pain that are non-surgical. She enjoys skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and biking.

Injuries that happen due to sustained, repetitive force being applied to the foot or ankle over time can become chronic if the body is not provided enough time to recover from them. Such injuries may include Achilles tendonitis, stress fractures, and plantar fasciitis.

Custom orthotics help patients overcome painful issues and can be used to treat conditions as diverse as bunions, cavus foot (high, rigid foot arches), flatfoot, metatarsalgia (forefoot pain), and plantar fasciitis (the leading cause of heel pain for adults).

Flat Feet
Fungus Toenails
Toenail fungus can be very stubborn, and many over-the-counter products do not provide enough help. If the condition of your nails is not showing improvement, do not hold off on contacting us for advanced treatment. The longer you wait, the deeper the fungus can embed into your nail.
Hammertoes
The primary reason that orthotics are so effective at addressing medical issues is the simple fact they are customized for a patient’s unique feet and gait pattern. We can also use them to treat hammertoe, Morton’s neuroma, and limb length deformities. We may prescribe orthotic devices as treatment (and prevention) for neuropathic ulceration.

Ingrown Toenails

Metatarsalgia
Pain under the ball of the foot is called “metatarsalgia” and can have many different causes such as a torn ligament responsible for stabilizing the toe, an injured nerve, an inflamed joint or even a stress fracture. The only way to find out what is causing your metatarsalgia is it to have it evaluated by a podiatrist.
