Originally from Florida, Amanda T. Abraira, MD, FACOG graduated from Florida State University College of Medicine. She then completed residency at Greenville Health System in Greenville, SC. Dr. Abraira is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, the Christian Medical & Dental Associations, and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Her interests include high risk obstetrics, vulvar disorders, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, contraception planning, and patient-centered care. Endometriosis is a condition that occurs in women when the inner uterus lining starts to grow outside of the uterus, often behind the uterus, on the bowels, or on the bladder. Endometriosis is most commonly diagnosed among women in their 30s and 40s, but the onset of the condition typically starts during reproductive years.

Primary dysmenorrhea: Severe menstrual pain begins within the first couple of years of menstruation. The uterine lining naturally produces prostaglandins, which are chemicals that cause the muscle of the uterus to contract. Women with dysmenorrhea may produce more prostaglandins which results in abnormally strong uterine contractions. Primary dysmenorrhea usually lessens with time, particularly after childbirth.

In addition to discussing your symptoms with your gynecologist, he or she may suggest another exam to diagnosis endometriosis. During a pelvic exam, your doctor may be able to feel for large cysts or scars behind your uterus. An ultrasound or MRI may also be done to check for ovarian cysts.

Chemotherapy or pelvic radiation treatment for cancer: This can cause damage to the ovaries and cause the ovaries to stop working completely or temporarily. It might be hard to get pregnant.
