Dental Examination
At your first appointment, you will be established as a patient at Johnston Dental Care. We will be doing a comprehensive exam, updating all x-rays, and a hygiene evaluation so that we know what type of cleaning you’ll need here in our office.

Oral Cancer Screening
An oral cancer screening examination protocol has been developed for use by both dental and medical professionals. The different environments of practice will dictate obvious differences in the equipment and manner in which the examination is conducted. However, all aspects of this thorough examination are applicable to both types of practitioners to ensure that a complete assessment of the patient has been accomplished. Clinicians use instruments and direct examination to perform a thorough examination. A complete head and neck exam can be done in 5 minutes. Our doctors and Hygienist’s do this on a regular basis and are more than happy to answer questions if you have any.

Teeth Cleaning
Understanding the disease process better will help researchers to think strategically about how to disrupt it. Currently, only about a third of the population seeks routine dental cleanings. Less invasive methods will lead to a new way of thinking about dental care, presumably resulting in more people seeking treatment and a proportional decrease in periodontal disease.
Fluoride Treatment
Before prescribing whitening, we do an exam evaluating the type of stain present, check for crowns and fillings in the front that will not whiten, discuss possible tooth sensitivity issues and come up with a plan to support you if you do experience sensitivity. We have had good success with a lower percentage of bleach, shorter duration of application, and fluoride treatments for sensitive teeth so do not let that concern hold you back from giving it a try! If you have gray stain due to a “dead” tooth we may recommend a procedure called internal bleaching. If you have white stains, bleaching may be the first step in your plan and then placing a few tooth colored restorations to smooth and protect the area may be needed. If you have traditional browning or yellowing of the teeth, bleaching alone will yield great results. If you have off colored restorations, we can plan for whitening and replacing the restorations with a brighter matching shade. When whitening through our dental office, we evaluate your whole mouth and the steps you need to get your dazzling white smile.
Dental Sealants
The American Dental Association recommends that kids receive dental sealants as soon as their adult teeth erupt. Dental sealants are a quick, easy, and relatively cheap solution for preventing cavities. They are thin coatings applied to the biting surfaces that help prevent bacteria and other debris from getting into the deep crevices on the teeth. Young children are great candidates for preventative measures like sealants because in many cases, decay has not set in. Children’s teeth tend to benefit more from sealants because these pits and groves tend to be deeper and less calcified then they are in adults. Kids are notoriously bad brushers and tend to ignore the problem areas in the back of the mouth that lead to cavities and decay.

Fillings
At Johnston Dental, we believe in only replacing metal fillings when needed. The ADA, The New England Journal of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, FDA, and the medical/dental field in general find that metal (also called amalgam) fillings are not found to be a risk to health. It is true that mercury is an ingredient in amalgam fillings, but it is in such a low amount it has been found to be harmless. There is no need to panic and remove all metal fillings at once. However, metal fillings are outdated and often need to be replaced, and we now have better materials for fillings that bond tightly to the tooth. We often recommend replacing metal fillings, but only when warranted!
Resin Composite
If it’s a small chip to just the enamel on your tooth we might possibly do a simple dental filling or if it requires a more cosmetic approach we will use a procedure called bonding where we match a composite resin to your tooth color and bond it to your tooth so that it will be impossible or nearly impossible to see any visible sign of damage to your tooth.
Crowns
It takes two appointments to restore a tooth with a crown. In the first any decay is removed from the tooth and it is shaped to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in fabricating a crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, usually of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic material, or gold. During this time a temporary crown is worn. In the second visit this temporary is removed. Then the permanent crown is adjusted as needed and then cemented in place.

Restorative Dentistry
Dr. Shane received the prestigious CARDP Scholar award for receiving the highest marks in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. He also received Nova Scotia Dental Association Prize for his proficiency in clinical procedures and attention to detail. Some of his favorite time was spent at various externships that involved serving the community. He volunteered at elementary schools in underserved areas where he was able to provide much needed dental care to young children. Dr. Shane enjoys performing a wide variety of dental procedures and is committed to providing quality care.

Root Canal Treatment
Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be restored with a filling. They are most commonly done after root canal treatment, or when a large filling wears out. The larger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be needed. Even after a filling is put in a large cavity, a tooth is more likely to break. Keep in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the human body. Teeth are subjected to tremendous pressures. Crowns ride over the weakened tooth, providing strength and protecting the tooth against breakage. A broken or cracked tooth is a far more serious matter and much more difficult to treat. Crowns prevent this, as well as making for a nice smile.

Dentures
If you wear a denture, make sure you remove it at night, clean with a denture brush, and soak it in a denture cleaner overnight. This eliminates any stuck food particles and lets your gums breathe.

Oral Surgery
He graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in 2005 with a Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree. He received multiple academic and clinical awards and was inducted into the Stomatognathic Honor Society, the dental honor society of Temple University, and the Oral Surgery Honor Society.
Tooth Extractions
Dentists are finding exciting new treatments and technologies are being developed at an ever increasing rate. Oral surgery is faster and safer than it has ever been. Tooth extraction has been greatly reduced over the past several years. Now, with the discovery of the Treponema surface molecule and its role in plaque accumulation, preventive care for high risk health problems associated with oral disease can be recognized and treated.
Bone Grafting
In January 2009, he and his family moved back to Roseburg where he bought his own private dental practice. His professional interests focus on family and general dentistry as well as dental alveolar surgery, extractions, advanced bone grafting procedures, and dental implant procedures. His experience and ongoing education gave him opportunities to mentor and teach other dentists in the field of implant dentistry. On November 8, 2014, Dr. Kobernik was honored with the American Academy of Implant Dentistry’s Associate Fellow designation after passing rigorous written and oral exams. While maintaining his practice in Roseburg, Dr. Kobernik has proudly served as the past president and past vice president of our local Oregon Dental Society affiliate, the Umpqua Dental Society.

If baby teeth become diseased or decayed it can lead to pain and infection. It can also be difficult for children to eat a well-balanced meal with a mouth full of cavities. Untreated cavities also increase the amount of decay causing bacteria in the mouth. As permanent teeth erupt, they are at increased risk for developing cavities because of the higher bacteria count. Baby teeth also hold space in the mouth for the erupting permanent teeth. If the baby teeth become decayed or are taken out too early, the permanent teeth often become crowded and will likely need braces to straighten in the future

Teeth Whitening
First, please be aware that at Johnston Dental, we never harass or shame our patients regarding their tooth shade (or about anything!). As part of an exam, we ask if there is anything you would like to change about your smile. If you are interested in whitening we have information and tools for you! We have seen great results from whitening and are happy to help you achieve your most beautiful smile. That being said, if you’re already happy with your current shade, we are happy too! Whitening is cosmetic and can be a great confidence boost, but what matters most is a healthy mouth.
