Granite Bay Design & Building Co

Run! Run fast, run far and do not look back. I would never use Granite Bay Design & Building Company, Inc. license 751510 again and I cannot recommend them. If you disregard this advice please hire an attorney immediately. We hired Granite Bay Design & Building Company, Inc. for a remodel which included reengineering the existing dining room, hall, pantry, bathroom, and for building an addition for a new kitchen and great room. It started out OK and the foundation wall concrete pour went smoothly. It all went down hill from there.

Their carpenters showed up to work infrequently. At first I was concerned that they were not showing up to do work but later I was more concerned when they did show up. The sub-floor was installed at an inconsistent height-it sloped! The large new load bearing beam, approximately 12��� by 20��� by 30��� long, was installed too low, it hung down at about 7 feet, between an 8 foot and 10 foot ceiling, ugly. After our insistence, they eventually fixed these 2 problems. The new French doors were installed too low for the tile floor, we had to hire some one else to raise the doors. The bathroom walls that were specified on the plan for 2x6 were built with 2x4 inch lumber. The exterior fascia board had nails sticking out everywhere. The contract stated that lumber was at the market rate, reasonable enough, however when they presented us with the bill for the overage it included cost of doing business items such as saw blades and other items that were clearly not lumber.

Granite Bay Design & Building Company, Inc. hired the (Donald) Peterson Construction Co., license 440015, for the electrical work. It did not turn out well. Many electrical outlets were wired backwards, switches are installed in odd locations, ���dummy��� switch installed, lights at wrong locations, incorrect baffles for recessed lights which caused them to burn. The Peterson Construction Co. wired the ceiling fans in series which does not work with modern ceiling fans that use electronic controls (per the manufacturer) and refused to correct the problem. Lights in the remodeled area flicker. Granite Bay Design & Building Company, Inc, had the Peterson Construction Co. install the electrical BEFORE the cabinet designs were even completed, then sent us a bill to remove and replace the electrical to the correct location for the cabinets! I expected that the general contractor managing our construction project would know the correct order for construction and accomplish it in that order.

We expected that the Granite Bay Design & Building Company, Inc. general contractor that we hired would manage the project; instead it was managed by his wife���s brother, who is a competent sheet metal guy, but not an adequate project manager. The project manager had no authority; since anything involving monetary decisions was relegated to the general contractor���s wife (she never actually saw the remodel but regularly made decisions about the project). This was an extremely difficult and contentious situation to work with.

I could go on, but a job that should have taken less than a year is still not finished after about 2 and a half years. When we refused to pay the final installment due to all the incorrect and unfinished work, Granite Bay Design & Building Company, Inc. filed a Mechanic���s Lien on our house. We filed a complaint with the California Contractors State License Board. After $2000 dollars worth of attorney���s fees and a $3000 pay off, to pay twice for heating and air conditioning, we are finally free of Granite Bay Design & Building Company, Inc. I will never, ever, ever use Granite Bay Design & Building Company, Inc. again.
