Male Infertility
In men, a varicocele is a varicose vein in the scrotum. Not only can it be unsightly but it can also lead to pain and possible other complications including infertility issues. Varicocele embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a very small catheter inserted into a major vein. The catheter is guided through the circulatory system near the varicose vein. A sclerosing agent is then released through the catheter and that causes damage to the varicose vein. This causes the damaged vein to collapse and become eliminated from circulation. Normal blood flow is restored to the area as blood is rerouted through healthy veins.

Female Infertility

Kidney Stones
Sometimes for kidney stone patients, a ureteral stent can be used to assist in the drainage of urine around the stone (or calculi) on a temporary basis. A ureteral stent is placed during surgery by a urologist or through a nephrostomy tube access by an interventional radiologist. The stent from the kidney to the bladder is usually removed via the patient’s urethra from below with the use of a cystoscope (a small camera inserted into the urethra which can grasp the stent.
Lung Cancer
For patients with lung cancer who are undergoing treatment, it is common for fluid to build up in the chest cavity. This fluid build up is painful and potentially harmful, thus requiring draining the chest cavity. This is called a pleural effusion.

Ultrasound
Guided by ultrasound, an interventional radiologist may insert a PICC line. A PICC line is a useful venous line for gaining access to the circulatory system. Like other central lines that are placed into the body during procedures, a PICC line tip goes to a blood vessel near the heart. A PICC line is distinguishable in that it starts in one of the body’s extremities, usually in the upper arm. As this is the case, the ultrasound allows the interventional radiologist the ability to visualize the large, deep blood vessels in the arm for the PICC catheter’s placement.
MRI
Pelvic Congestion Syndrome. A variety of symptoms can present themselves with this syndrome such as pain following intercourse or menstruation, irritable bladder, vaginal discharge or the appearance of varicose veins on the vulva, buttocks or thigh. When all the other possibilities for abdominal pain have been ruled out, an MRI, diagnostic venogram or embolotherapy can assist in making a diagnosis of

In another minimally invasive procedure, utilizing a special needle, the interventional radiologist can destroy tumors through radiofrequency with heat or cryoablation by freezing. Both procedures are guided with imaging technology such as CT scans or ultrasound.

Dr. Allen has practiced Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology since 2000. Dr. Allen is the president of Advanced Radiology of Grand Island which he formed in 2005. Pinched Nerve
Lumbar spinal stenosis is narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back. It can be the result of a herniated disk, degenerative boney changes (osteophyte) or thickening of the ligamentum flavum. All can result in narrowing of the openings that the nerve roots exit from the spine. The symptoms can include: pain in the lower back, pain radiating down the back of the leg, numbness or tingling down the leg, weakness, aching or cramping. This is commonly known as a “pinched nerve.” Often, relief is felt from this condition if one leans forward or sits down, uses a cane, walker or shopping cart for support when walking, all of which create space in the spinal canal or nerve root opening. This relief can also be created by the X-Stop spacer, a small implant that can be placed between two bones in the spine to eliminate contact with the pinched nerve.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
A vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive surgery performed through 1 or 2 small nicks in the skin with the purpose of stabilizing a spinal compression fracture and decreasing the pain caused by the fracture. In contrast to kyphoplasty, no balloons are utilized during this procedure.
Hysterectomy
This procedure is preferable for the treatment of uterine fibroids because it is not as invasive as surgery or a hysterectomy. Recovery time is much faster and the procedure has a very high success rate in eliminating the symptoms of bleeding and pain.

Achilles Tendonitis
This minimally invasive outpatient procedure was developed by physicians at the Mayo Clinic. The most common areas of tendon injury or pain are: tennis or golfer’s elbow involving the outside or inside of the elbow respectively, jumper’s knee involving the patellar tendon in the front of the knee, the rotator cuff of the shoulder, plantar fasciitis involving the plantar fascia in the bottom of the foot, and Achilles tendonitis involving the Achilles tendon in the back of the foot. Using ultrasound guidance, a special needle the size of a pencil tip is advanced into the tendon through a small nick in the skin. Ultrasonic energy is is used to cut and remove the diseased portion of the tendon which is causing the pain without damaging normal tendon. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis with only local anesthetic. It usually takes 15-20 mins. Typically the patient must refrain from heavy lifting or weight bearing activities for 2 weeks. Resuming moderate activity in 2-6 weeks and normal activity in 6-8 weeks.
