We recommend that we see your child for their “First Appointment” around their first birthday, unless you have concerns or an emergency arises before then. You and your child will meet with our Treatment Coordinator, who will assist you through your entire first visit to our office. She will review with you your child’s medical history and any dental concerns that you may have at that time. After meeting the doctor, he/she will perform a thorough dental exam on your child. We will use the show, tell and do technique at all times so that you and your child are well aware of what is happening.

X-rays
With contemporary safeguards, such as lead aprons and high-speed film, the amount of radiation received in a dental X-ray examination is extremely small. Even though there is very little risk, pediatric dentists are particularly careful to minimize the exposure of child patients to radiation. In fact, dental X-rays represent a far smaller risk than an undetected and untreated dental problem.

Fluoride Treatment
The exam includes the evaluation of the teeth and gums, a head and neck assessment and a preliminary orthodontic evaluation. We will determine if any X-rays are necessary, and discuss if a cleaning and fluoride treatment should be done at this time.
Dental Sealants
Sealants are clear or white plastic applied to the teeth to help prevent cavities. Sealants fill in the grooved and pitted surfaces of the teeth, which are hard to clean, and shut out food particles that could get caught, causing cavities. Fast and comfortable to apply, sealants can effectively protect teeth for many years. They are meant to help prevent cavities, but do not eliminate the possibility of getting cavities. You still need to brush and floss regularly.
Space Maintainers
Since primary teeth guide the permanent teeth into place, infants with missing primary teeth or infants who prematurely lose primary teeth may require a space maintainer, a device used to hold the natural space open.

Crowns
Hall Technique (HT) is a minimally invasive restorative option for primary teeth with severe decay and/or hypomineralization without numbing (shots), tooth preparation (drilling), or sedation (general anesthesia/IV deep sedation). HT is an evidence based procedure with 5 randomized control trials, with clinical efficacy equivalent to the conventional surgical approach to stainless steel crown (SSC) placement. It originated in Scotland in the 1990’s where general practitioner, Dr. Norna Hall, accidentally discovered that when she sealed her pediatric patient’s carious lesions within a glass ionomer cement under a SSC, the lesions became arrested (inactive) once starved of the carbohydrate substrate necessary to get worse/deeper. Sealing the lesions allows the vital pulp to lay down reparative dentin and retreat/wall itself off from the carious lesion. The procedure is well tolerated by most pediatric patients and is a welcome alternative to the more invasive surgical approach.

Dr. Wil Saavedra made his childhood home in Virginia, and attended Radford (VA) University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology. He went on to achieve his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDS), as well as his Master of Science in Oral Biology, along with a specialty certificate in Orthodontics from the Temple University School of Dentistry.
