Insects and Spiders

Ants
Ants can be a problem in and around the homes and other structures. Most will build their nests outdoors in the soil. Those that invade buildings usually will nest near foundation walls or under concrete slabs. Some species will nest in the walls of a building. Homes built on concrete slabs often have serious ant problems. Ants nest under the slabs and enter through cracks, heating ducts, and utility openings.
Spiders
There are more than 34,000 species of spiders known worldwide, with almost 900 species found in Texas. The identification and of these silk-spinning arachnids can become confusing. Most are small and have a body length of 3.6 inches or less, some are venomous and pack danger withi their powerful bite. Spiders are usually nuisances due to their webbing activities. All spiders are poisonous to some degree because they use poison on their prey, but only the BLACK WIDOW and the BROWN RECLUSE (or FIDDLEBACK SPIDER) are capable of inflicting serious injury to humans. Neither spider will bite unless provoked.
Termites
Termites Termites mostly feed on dead plant material, generally in the form of wood, leaf litter, soil, or animal dung, and about 10% of the estimated 4,000 species are economically significant as pests that can cause serious structural damage to buildings, crops or plantation forests. Termites are major detritivores, particularly in the subtropical and tropical regions, and their recycling of wood and other plant matter is of considerable ecological importance.
Fleas
Fleas are wingless insects (1/16 to 1/8-inch (1.5 to 3.3 mm long) and are agile, usually dark colored (ie, the reddish-brown of the cat flea), with tube-like mouth-parts to feed on the blood of their hosts. Fleas have long legs, the hind pair well adapted for jumping. A flea can jump vertically up to 7 inches (18 cm) and horizontally up to 13 inches (33 cm) making the flea one of the best jumpers of all known animals (relative to body size), second only to the froghopper.
Cockroaches
Four species of cockroaches are commonly found throughout the United States. They vary somewhat in appearance and habits, but in general they are all rather large, flattened insects, brownish or dark in color and fast-running. They seek concealment in the daytime and when disturbed at night. Roaches and their egg cases (otheca) are easily transported into buildings in furniture, boxes, grocery bags, animal feed sacks, and other similar containers. In apartments and large buildings, they migrate from one area to another along water pipes or other openings between units. Some species enter structures from outdoors or come in through sewer openings.
Silverfish
They are distributed through most parts of the world and are normally found outdoors under rocks, and leaf litter but are also often found indoors where they are considered pests. Silverfish are primarily a nuisance inside homes or buildings as they do not cause major damage, though they can contaminate food, damage paper goods, and stain clothing.
Bees
Despite the honey bee's painful sting and the stereotype of insects as pests, bees are generally held in high regard. This is due to their usefulness as pollinators and as producers of honey, their social nature, and their reputation for diligence. Bees are adapted to feeding on nectar and pollen, the former as an energy source and the latter for protein and nutrients. Pollen is used as a food for larvae. Honey bees, bumble bees and carpenter bees can become serious pests in and around buildings, not only because they can sting, but in the case of honey bees and carpenter bees they can cause structural damage that may result from the nest-building activities. Honey bees may build nests in walls, chimneys and attics. Combs may melt and allow honey to seep through walls and ruin the interior. Old honey combs can become infested with other insects which may cause further damage. Carpenter bees can drill 1/2 inch holes into the exposed wood of buildings. These holes make a 90 degree turn below the surface and run with the grain of the wood for distances up to 12 inches.

Ticks
These species are distributed around the world. They tend to flourish more in countries with warm, humid climates, because they require moisture in the air in order to undergo metamorphosis, and because low temperatures inhibit their development from egg to larva. Ticks on domestic animals are common and varied in tropical countries, where they cause considerable harm to livestock by transmission of many species of pathogens and also causing direct parasitic damage.
Crickets
Fire ants can be recognized from other ants by their copper brown head and body with a dark abdomen. Worker ants are blackish to reddish, and sizes vary from 2 mm to 6 mm (0.12 in to 0.24 in). Different size fire ants can exist in the same nest. A fire ant colony forms large mounds in open areas and will feed on young plants, seeds, and occasionally crickets. They often attack small animals and can kill them. Different from other ants which bite and then spray acid on the wound, fire ants bite to get a grip and then sting (from their abdomen) and inject toxic venom called solenopsin, a derivitive from the class of piperidines. For people, this is a very painful sting similar to a burn by fire—thus the name fire ant—and after effects can be deadly to sensitive individuals. The venom is insecticidal and antibiotic. They nest in the soil near moist areas such as river banks, pond shores, watered lawns and along highways. In most cases the nest will not be visible as it is built under timber, logs, rocks, or bricks. With no cover for nesting dome-shaped mounds will be visible, but these are usually found in open spaces such as fields, parks and lawns. Mounds can reach heights of 40 cm (15.7 in), and can be as deep as a meter and a half (five feet). Colonies are formed by small groups of queens or single queens. If only one queen survives, within a month or so, the colony can still expand to thousands of ants. Some colonies may be polygynous having multiple queens per nest.
Flies
Paper wasp. Paper wasps are usually.7 to 1 inch (1.8 to 2.5cm) long. They gather fibers from wood and plant stems and construct nests that are gray or brown and are water repellant. They sometimes are referred to as umbrella wasps because of the design of the nest. The nests have open combs with cells. Paper wasps secrete a chemical which repels ants, protecting the nest. Nests are found in sheltered areas such as tree branches, open pipes or eaves of a building. They are important to the bio system and they feed on nectar and insects such as caterpillars and flies. Gardeners sometimes consider them beneficial. Paper wasps will only attack if their nest or themselves is threatened. Paper wasp stings can be painful and can produce a fatal reaction to people who are allergic. Nests in human inhabited areas can present a hazard.
Hornets
Hornet. The common European hornet was accidentally introduced to North America around the middle of the 19th century. However, it has never been found in western North America. Hornets are the largest eusocial wasps, some species can reach up to 5.5 cm (2.2 in) in length. They have stings used to kill prey and defend hives. Hornet stings are more painful to humans than typical wasp stings because the venom contains a large amount (5%) of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine (often abbreviated ACh) is an organic, polyatomic ion that acts as a neurotransmitter in both the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS) in many organisms including humans. People who are allergic to wasp venom are also allergic to hornet stings. Reactions are commonly treated with epinephrine (adrenaline) injection using a device such as an EpiPen ®, with follow-up treatment in a hospital. In severe cases, allergic individuals may go into anaphylactic shock and die unless treated promptly.
Yellow Jackets
Yellow Jacket wasp. Common name in North America for these predatory wasps is yellow jacket. They are known as "wasps" in other English-speaking countries. Most of them are black and yellow with alternating bands on the abdomen, some are black and white (such as the bald-faced hornet), while others may have an abdomen background color that is red instead of black. Yellow jackets can be identified by their distinctive markings, small size (similar to a honey bee), they occur only in colonies with a characteristic, rapid, side to side flight pattern prior to landing. Females are capable of stinging. They have a lance like stinger with small barbs and will sting repeatedly, producing painful stings. The venom is dangerous to humans if they are allergic. Yellow Jackets build nests in trees, shrubs, or in protected areas such as attics, hollow walls or floors, sheds, under porches, under siding or eaves of houses. Despite having drawn the loathing of humans, yellow jackets are in fact important predators of pest insects.
Stinging Insects
Cicada killer wasp. Cicada killers digs holes in lawns or the earth in which it places a cicada which it has captured and paralyzed. It lays an egg on the cicada which hatches and feeds on the cicada producing a new wasp. Cicada Killers, one of the least aggressive wasps, commonly attract attention because of their sheer size ranging from 1 ¼ to over 1 1/2 inches long with black and yellow coloring. Cicada killer wasps will not sting or cause harm if left alone (only the male will buzz people). It is best left alone since it rarely stings. Although they are confused with other stinging insects, cicada killer venom is very mild and doesn't cause much more then a bump and red mark. Beware, individuals that are allergic to stings should still avoid these insects. Cicada killers have weak stings that are meant to paralyze their prey and damage the vertebrates, not cause pain.
Mites
Ticks are small arachnids from the order of Ixodida. With mites, they make up the subclass Acarina. Ticks are ectoparasites (external parasites), living on the blood of mammals, birds, and sometimes reptiles and amphibians. Ticks are carriers of a number of diseases...
Aphids
Little black ants are very small black ants and are related to the Pharaoh ant (an indoor pest ant). Little black ants make their nests in soil under rocks, logs, or other debris and will build nests open areas of lawns. Nests in the ground are small craters of very fine soil. Little black ant colonies can also be found under bark of trees, in debris trapped in crotches of trees, damaged wood by termites, in piles of firewood and in stacks of bricks and stones. They feed on a variety of food including live and dead insects, and honeydew produced by aphids. Little black ants are active foragers and search in trails of a few or up to hundreds of workers. Trails can be located along sidewalks and foundations and up the sides of buildings.
Firebrats
Frequently called a silverfish, fishmoth or firebrats, they are small, wingless insects of the order Thysanura. Its common name comes from the animal's silvery light grey and blue color. It is a scale covered, wingless, carrot-shaped insect about 1/2 inch long as adults with three long "bristle tails" at the end of the body combined with the fish-like appearance of its movements. Their diet consists of carbohydrates such as sugar or starches. Silverfish and Firebrats are gray colored.

Rodents
Forty percent of mammal species are rodents. They are found in large numbers on all continents other than Antarctica. Common rodents include mice, rats, squirrels, porcupines, beavers, guinea pigs, and hamsters. Rodents are identified by a single pair of continuously growing incisors in each of the upper and lower jaws which must be kept short by gnawing. They gnaw wood, break into food, and bite predators. Mostwill eat seeds or plants, though some have more varied diets. Some species have historically been pests, eating seeds stored by people and spreading disease.
Mice
Mice. A mouse (plural: mice) is a small mammal in the rodent family, characteristically having a pointed snout, small rounded ears, and a long naked or almost hairless tail. The best known species is the common house mouse (Mus musculus). It is also a popular pet. Certain kinds of field mice are also common. The mouse is eaten by large birds such as hawks and eagles. They are known to invade homes and buildings for food and occasionally shelter. Cats, wild dogs, foxes, birds of prey, snakes and even certain kinds of arthropods have been known to prey heavily upon mice. Because of its adaptability to almost any environment, the mouse is one of the most successful mammalian genera living today. They at times be vermin, damaging and eating crops, causing structural damage and spreading diseases through their parasites and feces. In North America, breathing dust that has come in contact with mouse excrement has been linked to hantavirus. Nocturnal animals, mice compensate for their poor eyesight with a keen sense of hearing, and rely especially on their sense of smell to locate food and avoid predators. There are other reasons why mice are used in laboratory research. Mice are small, inexpensive, easily maintained, and can reproduce quickly. Several generations of mice can be observed in a relatively short period of time. Mice are generally very docile if raised from birth and given sufficient human contact. Certainc strains however have been known to be temperamental. Mice and rats have the same organs in the same places, just different proportions.
Rats
Rats. The best-known rat species are the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus).This group is known as the Old World rats or true rats, and originated in Asia. Rats are bigger than most Old World mice, which are their relatives, but seldom weigh over 500 grams (1.1 lb) in the wild. Rats serve as zoonotic vectors (carriers) for certain pathogens and cause disease, such as Lassa fever, leptospirosis and Hantavirus infection. However, the rat is almost never directly responsible for the pathogen. Though it is commonly believed that rat is responsible for the outbreak of bubonic plague, the European citizens are to blame. After throwing waste into the street the rats moved where it was easy to find food. The rat flea then spread the plague from there. It is estimated that as many if not more rats died from the plague than people.
