I LOVE this place! Friendly staff, knowledgeable vets, they really seem to care about your animals. I've never had so much follow up or been given so much information. The place is clean and the prices are reasonable. I have myself a vet forever!!! Thanks everyone at Main Street Vet!

Dental Care
With the addition of the advanced dentistry department to our hospital, we have had many questions asked about the difference between dental care "then and now". We would like to take this opportunity to share some of those questions and answers with you.
Vaccination

What can I do to protect my pet? Heartworm disease is preventable! Dogs should be tested annually and before starting prevention. Provide heartworm prevention 12 months of the year. Prevention is the safest and most cost-effective option, but treatment is available for dogs (although costly and lengthy). Cats should be tested before starting prevention and re-tested as the veterinarian deems appropriate. There is NO treatment in cats, so prevention is critical and the only means of protection.

With your pet’s comfort and safety at the forefront, we utilize pain management protocols before, during, and after surgery until they are completely recovered. This includes monitoring of vital signs, assessing your pet for pain indicators and keeping them well fed, warm and comfortable in their surroundings.

Itching, scratching, and hot spots are all signs of allergies and skin conditions in pets. Just like humans, pets can be sensitive to irritants that cause them distress. Why should you vaccinate your pet? Vaccinations are very important for young pets when their immune systems are still developing. Vaccines protect against many viral and bacterial infections in pets. Our vets provide vaccination education and discuss our vaccine schedule, which helps to keep your pet healthy.

We routinely perform orthopedic surgeries, which are procedures related to bones and joints. Common orthopedic pet surgeries include bone fracture repair, cruciate ligament repair, extracapsular and TPLO techniques, leg or toe amputation, patellar luxation repair, and surgeries to treat hip dysplasia, including femoral head ostectomy (FHO).

An EKG is a painless test used to diagnose cardiac abnormalities, such as an enlarged heart, heart murmur, congestive heart failure, or irregular heart rhythm. EKGs can also help determine if your pet’s heart is strong enough to undergo anesthesia and is often used as a pre-surgical test.

Periodontal Disease Treatment
Periodontal disease is the result of inflammation caused by plaque. It leads to the destruction of the structures that support the tooth. Symptoms to watch for in your pet include gingivitis (redness of the gums) and mouth odor. Because pets often show no outward signs of periodontal disease, routine oral examinations are necessary for your pet's health. Periodontal disease is the most common disease seen in dogs and cats.

Spending two weeks at Main Street Veterinary Hospital and Dental Clinic was a wonderful experience! During my externship, I assisted and closely observed several oral procedures and surgeries including mandibulectomies, operculectomies, full-mouth extractions, and jaw fracture repair. I was taught how to scale and polish teeth. I was also shown how to correctly take and interpret dental radiographs. Additionally, I learned about anesthesia, analgesia, and antibiotics used in dental procedures. On the last day, I was given a cadaver head and taught how to perform extractions using a high-powered drill. The dental team doctors, and the highly-skilled dentistry nurses were excellent at explaining difficult concepts and were always enthusiastic to teach. My dentistry knowledge was very limited before this off-campus block, but I now feel comfortable diagnosing several dental diseases, taking dental radiographs, cleaning teeth, and performing simple extractions!

Ophthalmic Surgery
Our veterinarians are experienced in various soft tissue pet surgeries, the most routinely performed procedures being spay/neuters and mass/tumor removals. Other examples of veterinary soft tissue surgeries include intestinal foreign body removal, laceration and wound repair, eye surgery, specialized surgeries, perineal urethrostomy, mastectomy, and splenectomy.

Her professional interests include high quality dentistry, exotic animal medicine, soft tissue surgery, and shelter medicine. She feels fortunate to have gained a large range of general practice dental skills from her time observing veterinary dentist Dr. Heidi Lobprise and her dental residents. Her favorite part of being a veterinarian is honoring the human-animal bond no matter the species.

Spaying and Neutering
Spaying or neutering your pet is an important decision for pet owners. Removal of the male or female reproductive organs prevents unwanted pregnancies and reproductive cancers from threatening your pet's life. We offer spay and neuter surgery as part of your pet's preventative wellness care.

Laboratory Services
For puppies and kittens, we need to see them on a more frequent schedule during their first year of life. For pets over age 7, we recommend exams and blood work every 6 months to help us detect diseases and issues before they become a problem.
X-Ray
Dental Radiology
Remember that approximately 75% of each tooth is below the gumline where it cannot be seen. Without dental x-rays, it is impossible to know if there is disease in that part of the tooth. A tooth can look perfectly normal and yet be causing your pet much pain. X-rays also allow us to assess the health of the bone socket that supports the tooth.
Microchipping
Should I microchip my pet? Every year thousands of pets go missing. Even the most responsible pet owners experience broken leashes, escape artists, and thefts. Microchipping is a safe, effective, and permanent way to identify your pet in the event they get lost or stolen.
