Masaki Kyoto Japanese Restaurant

The Kyoto is typical of Eureka. The service was slow and not particularly professional. The really important part is that the staff left two tables (there are only 8 or 9 tables in the restaurant) uncleaned for a good half an hour. This is unforgivable in a sushi restaurant. Cleanliness is the guarantee of safety when eating fresh fish. Therefor any laxity in this area should not be tolerated. I observed the preparation area, it is small with several chefs working at once in confined spaces. There was simply to much food in open areas for proper sushi preparation. Really good sushi restaurants pride themselves on their preparation areas that are always kept spotlessly clean. The negri and magura I ordered were average, alright but nothing special in terms of freshness or quality. My wife had the best dinner - a bread encrusted pork loin - very good. Our guest ordered the chicken tempura dinner, both she and I thought the chicken was undercooked. The prices were about right for a Japanese restaurant in northern California - about $25 per person for dinner.
