In addition to his work with LASIK refractive surgery, Dr. Haines is one of the first doctors in Lane County to perform laser cataract surgery. He also specializes in plastic surgery of the eyelids, lens implantation, treatment of glaucoma, geriatric eye care, and diabetic diseases of the eye.

Dr. Brian Walker graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brigham Young University. He then attended medical school at University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and subsequently completed ophthalmology residency at Louisiana State University in Shreveport.

Cataracts
The number of IOL implants available to be used for cataract/lens exchange surgery has increased over the last 35 years. Older lens types and techniques were not uniformly successful. Fortunately, with modern, high-quality IOLs and highly sophisticated surgical techniques, most patients can achieve excellent vision. The most recent IOL advancements are multifocal or pseudo-accommodative lenses that allow patients to see close up and in the distance. As technology improves, implants will allow cataract and refractive lens exchange patients a higher quality of life with less dependency on glasses or additional corrective lenses.
Cataract Surgery
A refractive lens exchange is basically the same thing as cataract surgery. The only difference is that cataract surgery is performed when the natural lens has become cloudy and is affecting the vision of the eye. Cataract surgery is deemed medically necessary and covered by insurance, whereas refractive lens exchange is deemed an elective medical procedure.
Eye Exam
People who experience difficulty wearing glasses and contact lenses due to allergies, dryness of the eyes, astigmatism, or other irritants. Generally the best candidates have low to moderate levels of myopia (-1.00 to -8.00 diopters) or hyperopia (+1.00 to +2.00 diopters). In addition, their lifestyle or career may require good vision without the use of glasses or contact lenses to function well. A thorough eye examination and evaluation is required prior to having iLASIK.
