Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye disease that affects the eyeâ€™s optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. The damage occurs when the fluid in the front part of the eye builds up, creating pressure. There are two principal forms of Glaucoma â€“ Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma and Angle Closure Glaucoma or â€œNarrow-angleâ€ Glaucoma.

Scott Cherne, Bala Ambati, Eric J Niespodzany, Dr. Mando and Matt Neale at Pacific Clear Vision Institute and Eugene Eye Care in Eugene, OR.
Macular Degeneration
There are a number of different treatments for macular degeneration. There are several different retinal lasers, which may or may not be used in conjunction with special medication, as well as standard argon laser treatment. The type of laser used to stabilize macular degeneration will depend on the results of a Fluorescein Angiogram.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK is a surgical procedure that uses a laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. LASIK is a common alternative to another vision correction procedure entitled PRK (photorefractive keratectomy). In LASIK, a small portion of the cornea is lifted away from the eye first. To do this, a laser is used to painlessly create a flap using the outer layers of the cornea. This flap remains attached to the eye but is folded back on a small “hinge” that is not completely cut. This creates a “bed” on the cornea and the laser is then used to reshape this part of the eye.
Cataracts
Typically, there is very little pain during or after the surgery, and people can go about their normal activities right away. Few restrictions exist afterward, most people can golf, drive, shop, or visit friends without worry. Often people comment on their desire to have their other eye done soon after their initial surgery! Improvement is usually rapid; as the eye heals, generally the vision improves within hours or days. The surgeon will replace the cataract with a lens that often corrects most near or farsightedness, and can result in glasses that are very thin and used primarily for reading.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery should be performed when your visual needs require it. It is fine to wait for cataract surgery if you are comfortable with your vision for what you need to see. If things such as driving, watching TV, reading, shopping or other activities become difficult due to cataracts, it is beneficial to have them removed. Based on your symptoms and the recommendations of your medical eye doctor, you and your doctor can decide if cataract surgery is appropriate.
Eye Exam
Lower Eyelid Disorder (Entropion) Entropion is a condition in which the lower eyelid and lashes turn or roll inward and rub against the eye, causing redness, irritation, and sensitivity to light and wind. Entropion may be caused by age, disease, inflammation, scarring, trauma, tumor, or occur at birth. Entropion is a serious condition that requires treatment. The most common symptom of entropion is chronic eye irritation which may lead to excessive tearing, infection, corneal damage, impaired vision, or even loss of the eye. The condition can be diagnosed with a routine eye examination, and special tests are not necessary.

Undergraduate work in Chemistry brought Dr. Neale back to his roots in rural Idaho where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelorâ€™s degree in Chemistry at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. Research interests at that time included enzyme kinetics in sucrose metabolism. After brief stints in mechanical engineering, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry, Dr. Neale realized that his talents would be best used to alleviate human suffering; thus resolved, he then pursued and received his medical degree in 2007 at the Chicago Medical School. After completing a one-year internship in Internal Medicine at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois, he went on to complete his ophthalmology residency in 2011 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Ultrasound
Surgery for cataracts is done using high-frequency ultrasound which softens the cataract, thus allowing it to be vacuumed out through a tiny incision under the eyelid or on the cornea. The incision is designed to not require sutures and seals on its own. Full activity is allowed after surgery. Many people golf, drive and enjoy a movie just a short time after treatment. To clarify one common misconception, lasers are typically not used in cataract surgery. They are being investigated currently and may one day provide an alternative to current techniques.

Blepharospasm Benign essential blepharospasm (BEB) is a rare condition that causes the eyelids to spasm or uncontrollably close or blink from muscle contraction. BEB is, as its name suggests, a benign condition, because it does not damage the eyes, but patients may be blinded because of the inability to keep the eyelids open. The exact cause of BEB remains unknown. It usually occurs in both eyes and often worsens over time. Blepharospasm can be difficult to distinguish from other conditions and an accurate diagnosis often requires imaging of the brain. There is no cure for blepharospasm, but treatments are available to alleviate the symptoms. Botulinum (Botox) injections are the most effective treatment, though ongoing injections are needed to maintain relief. Other treatment options include oral medication or surgery of the eyelids or brain. Treatment can also be aimed at reducing eyelid irritation, fatigue or other underlying conditions.
Brow Lift
Eyebrow Ptosis Patients occasionally seek surgery for baggy or drooping eyelids only to discover that a brow lift is more appropriate. It can be easy to overlook this underlying condition, as problems with the eyebrow may be most noticeable in their effect on the eyelid. With age, ligaments suspending our brow can relax and stretch, causing it to sag. Our surgeons at PCVI are specially trained and experienced in identifying the correct cause and treatment in these cases. We perform direct browplasty surgery to surgically lift the brows. This surgery involves cutting across the skin directly above the brow.

Blepharoplasty
An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, can dramatically improve an aged appearance, or tired, sad or angry-appearing face, or correct a disorder of the eyelid. For patients with excess skin, drooping eyelids, or bags under the eyes, tissue from around the eyes is removed to reveal a natural and more youthful appearance. It is one of the most popular aesthetic procedures performed in the United States.

Ulcer
A shield protector over the eye is commonly used during the first week primarily at night. Office visits following the procedure are typically the next day, then several days later, and then times usually double between visits. Occasionally a suture may loosen and will cause a foreign body sensation like an eyelash scratching the eye. If this happens call to be seen within 24 hours as a loosened suture can erode the delicate cornea tissue quickly and cause an ulcer. Good lubrication of the surface of the eye is required following the procedure, especially during the first few weeks. One must avoid contaminating the new tissue by washing their hands before touching their eyelids or when putting in their drops. The new vision provided by the new cornea is truly a gift of sight.
